Notes overview

Note: Notes is no longer under development, and it is no longer available for download

Lotus Notes is the premier, integrated desktop client option for accessing e-mail, calendars and applications on IBM Lotus Domino server. Business decision-making cycles are highly collaborative, and e-mail is only a small part of the technology solution. Think outside the in-box. Join the millions of users who benefit from increased productivity through Lotus Notes client software infused with collaboration.

What’s new in version 8.5.3

Version 8.5.3:
  • Improve your mail experience through the use of managed mail replicas. Many Lotus Notes mail users have optimized their mail experience by accessing a local replica of their mail instead of on the IBM® Lotus® Domino® server. But some users don't know how to create or maintain a local replica. Now, Lotus Domino administrators can create and configure local replicas through policies using the new managed mail replica feature.
  • Easily determine which archive you have open among multiple archives. When you are working in an archive, the title will say "Archive" and then the name of the archive.
  • Save mail messages in a .eml file format
  • View, as well as reserve, rooms and resources in your calendar. And private iCalendar feeds can now be added to your calendar.
  • Make your contacts or groups private, and gain more control over which addresses are added to your recent contacts list.
  • Compliance with 2009 Federal Desktop Core Configuration requirements.

Surely this should show as a Hot pick on Macupdate? It's one of the most widely used email clients, behind Outlook. Not that I actually enjoy using this at work, it's cumbersome and has annoying traits and habits). However, the latest version is vastly improved over version 5 I used before and seems more stable.

I've been demoing the 8.51 version for a couple of weeks now and it's much improved over last versions. It's very stable and hasn't crashed and is rich in functionality. This is a great alternative to MS Exchange/Outlook. But I haven't experimented with it enough to rate it yet. There are several Java plug-ins that work on the Mac platform, but you really have to search for them. Unfortunately IBM does not seem to have a Mac page that pulls all the Mac options together for Mac users. If it did this I think they could make a large push among Mac users. Lotus Notes can be used by a single user without the need for a Domino server (which is not available on the Mac platform altho it is available on Linux) so you can use the Notes client as a standalone email client as well as calendar, to do list, and many other modules. It's more of a platform than a single app. It's worth checking out.

I have never worked with a more cumbersome office suite than Lotus Notes. The one positive thing I could find: it is secure.
