gBrowser overview

gBrowser is an image browser and organizer with no annoying databases or hidden libraries. What you see in the Finder is what you see in gBrowser - except gBrowser presents you with large, beautiful thumbnails and gives you the tools to easily view and organize your images.

It includes a thumbnail browser, "Drop Locations" and file flagging tools to make sorting out and moving your images a snap (set hotkeys to send files to certain folders!), a powerful batch rename function with the ability to save presets, the "Image Viewer" which works much like Quicklook on single monitors, but is even more useful when opened permanently on a secondary monitor, Bookmarks for your different photo collections, and more...

What’s new in version 2.6b10

Version 2.6b10:
New Features:
  • You can now group folders last in the thumbnail pane, in addition to first or inline.
Bugs Fixed:
  • Image scroll positions should be more accurately remembered in the slideshows and Quick View.
Known bugs:
  • Temporarily, filenames and file flag status do not appear in slideshow windows as before. It will be back with a future update.
  • Occasionally the sidebar selection won't appear selected on launch. The plan is to completely rewrite the sidebar as was just done to the thumbnail view, so this minor issue will wait for that.
  • Toggle to/from sidebar key focus doesn't work yet.

I encourage to visit the developer's site, to read a bit how gBrowser was and is being developed. Turns out they developed a special framework called 'IMFilesystemTools' for developing this application. That's why I noticed that gBrowser is FAST, much faster than anything else of this kind, incl. some of the very well known applications. FROM the site: ".....The IMFilesystemTools framework is a very useful tool for developers whose applications work with large file heirarchies. While writing gBrowser, we discovered that keeping track of files and associated information was our #1 job, and this framework was born of that need. IMFilesystemTools is written in Objective-C, but is fully annotated to interoperate cleanly with Swift projects. The only thing missing is some clean block/closure-based callbacks (we use a lot of NSOperations) (– we plan on getting to that in the near future.)......" There is more there...how and what... Looks promising.

this is NOT a review, a comment. So far I like it. Considering it's a beta, two things for developer's attention. I'm sure it will be fixed. One is the ICONS of folders with pictures are blank, black. Another one, please add the size in PIXELS of the JPG underneath. Thanks and it is a potentially very nice software.

Holy cow! There's an updated version of this. Go to their home page via the MU link above. It has dark mode and seems pretty stable so far.

OK app, but suffers from flaws that could prove fatal for many users, depending on the tasks, compared to what other apps can do.

In particular, after deleting a file, the focus is lost. This means that, every time a user removes a picture, he has to find out who the next picture is and click on it. This is a major waste of time and annoyance. Other apps automatically select the next picture. Cleaning a folder is not an option with this app.

Alos, there is no menu / keyboard shortcut to open a pic in its own window, while a double click with the mouse works. Why such a feature is not accessible via the keyboard (or a menu), which again results in a significant waste of time.

Grid view is nice, with a much wider zoom range than many apps.

Hasn't been updated for quite some time, but still works fine under Maverick. Has the nicest grid view of any graphics browser, is fast and responsive in operation, and is still worth what I paid for it after nearly 5 years.
