Trash X overview

Trash X is a fully functional trashcan for Mac OS X. Extremely simple to use, it functions just like the classic Mac OS Trashcan - files and folders dropped on it are moved to the trash, and disks dropped on it are ejected. In addition, it also features numerous functions for the power user. You can use it to instantly delete or shred file and folders without sending them to the trash. You can use it to empty or shred trash only on selected disks. And of course, you can use it just like the trashcan you've always had on your desktop. Trash X is completely safe and it requires no system hacks or Terminal command line voodoo. Place an alias or copy of it on your desktop, in your documents folder, or anywhere else you wish.

Seriously? $10 for this? Something that is already available by default? No thank you.

There's a newbie born every minute. And devs happy to sell apps to them. One hint: use any app here like HideSwitch to make your invisible files temporarily visible. You will see .Trash in your home (User) directory—I certainly hope you have Home in your sidebar. Drag that Trash into the Finder sidebar. It will stay there (at least in Lion & earlier) and, presto, a handy Trash, the contents of which are a cinch to view.

I love Lion Cache Cleaner, but let me get this straight: Mountain Lion (10.8) is going to sell for $19.99, and this trash utility with a couple of extra bells and whistles is going to sell for half that?

For those that want to have this without spending $10 for what in my opinion is abhorrent value, I found this article in my archives and have tested it in Lion. Unfortunately I do not know who wrote it so I can't give credit to the author. I used 'FileBuddy' to find the file as I already have it and it made the task easy. Here is the routine: If you want to add a Trash Can to your desktop, the following works in Panther. The .Trash file is hidden so you need to find it somehow; I used WhatSize to locate the folder and double clicked to open it. Drag the .Trash folder to the sidebar of your Finder. Now create a new folder on your desktop, and then create an alias of the brand new folder. Do a "Get info" on the alias folder and click on "Select New Original" and select the .Trash folder on the Finder sidebar. Job done! Now delete the original folder created on your desktop, and rename and give a swanky new icon to the alias folder. [robg adds: An easy way to get to the .Trash folder is to hit Shift-Command-G (Go to Folder) and then type /Users/your_username/.Trash and hit return; this should open the trash folder for your user in a Finder window. Personally, I just use Command-Delete so I don't miss the desktop trash in the least, but I've had a few requests for a Panther-compatible trash on desktop hack, so here's one solution.]
