For more than a dozen years this tool from a japanese developer is now my “girl for everything” (at first its predecessor “Jedit X” and today for some years “Jedit Ω”). I work in an office and have to deal with text and rich text formats and this highly configurable editor, which is also very suitable for programmers, does it all. Especially if you’re in search for text AND rich text capabilities, you won’t find many alternatives on the Macintosh. Albeit the fact that this software is seemingly widespread just in Japan (it is capable for text editing in Japanese from top to bottom), it is also very suitable for western languages. Honestly I don’t know why this fine piece of software seems just to be known in Asian countries. Now I’m glad that its dev has finally put it here. Jedit Ω is doing its job flawlessly and really well. Every time you need it, it’s there in a second (no comparison with bloated programs like MS Word). That’s one of many reasons why I am prefering it. You can open files in multi window or multi tab style – or combine them both. If you have a Mac with a touch bar, this software makes the best use of it (again no comparison to Word): like a smartphone it suggests three words you might want to write and you simply touch the right one for fast text generation. This is how text creation should be: simple, fast and free from distractions. Within Jedit Ω you can configure nearly everything: from the sizes in which windows are opening the different file formats over keyboard shortcuts and syntax coloring to auto completion. Latest is a really impressive ChatGPT integration, which the developer has also published as a stand-alone tool due to its usefulness. If you want to learn how the ChatGPT integration works, you can look for the stand-alone tool “aiMenu” in MacUpdate. I have also written a lengthy comment there – and it’s more or less the same functionality as with the tool integrated in Jedit Ω (of course the integrated tool just works with Jedit Ω, whereas the stand-alone solution works with all kinds of text related software). Please mind that for using both of these you will need a paid API key from OpenAI (luckily very inexpensive for normal usage patterns). All in all Jedit Ω is a powerful tool for everyone who knows to use it.
