Mimestream overview

Mimestream combines your favorite Gmail features with the power of a native macOS app so you can move through your email effortlessly.

Made for Mac, optimized for Gmail

As a native app written in Swift, Mimestream leverages the full power of macOS to deliver a lightning-fast and instantly familiar experience. Instead of using the IMAP protocol, Mimestream utilizes the Gmail API to enable an enhanced set of features that let you work with ease.

Work smarter, email faster
  • Rise above the noise and focus on the work that matters most. Mimestream makes it easy to keep your inbox organized with confidence.
  • Categorized Inbox - with support for Gmail’s categories, focus on what matters most and triage the rest at your leisure.
  • Multiple Accounts
  • Label Management
Committed to Privacy

Your data and credentials are stored only on your device, and the app only makes direct connections to Gmail. There are no intermediary servers, and Mimestream does not collect or sell your email.

Key Features
  • Lightweight and Fast - Mimestream is built for speed, and only uses a minimal amount of disk space to cache recent messages
  • Offline Access - Fully functional when offline and on the slowest connections-perfect for business travelers and whenever you’re on the go
  • System Notifications - Receive macOS system notifications when you receive new messages, so you never fall behind on important threads
  • Aliases - Your email aliases are automatically synced from Gmail without any setup and are used for replies when appropriate
  • Signatures - Signatures set up in Gmail are automatically synced with Mimestream
  • Robust Search - Enter any Gmail search query into Mimestream and get consistent results. Search while offline, too
  • Swipe Gestures - Use familiar macOS swipe gestures to quickly triage and archive your email
  • Tracking Prevention - Read your email privately - Mimestream blocks tracking pixels from 50+ of the most common tracking services
  • Keyboard Shortcuts - Triage your email quickly using keyboard shortcuts, including the option to use familiar Gmail or Apple Mail shortcut sets

Fantastic. There are a lot people complaining about a $5 monthly fee. Great software costs money to build and operate. Do you want the founder and his team to work for you for free? If you want nice things, pay people to make them. For an app you will use literally dozens, maybe a hundred times a day, $5 a month is extremely reasonable to get the optimal experience.

Features: 5.0

All of the features of Apple Mail + more, as it uses as many of the features of Gmail as it can utilize via the API. They do have a public feature request board, although I’m not sure how closely it reflects their current priorities. Would be good to understand this piece more. I’d love to see a monthly newsletter on updates and priorities ahead.

Reliability: 5.0

Never had any performance issues. Works even better than Apple Mail honestly, which would bug out when viewing larger chains and images. Part of the reason I left Apple Mail was for the performance of Mimestream.

Mimestream looks great, works smoothly, and has a nice style about it; but it is pricy for what you get. At $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year (all subscription-based) this seems to me to be an expensive way to check (and organize) your email. It seems to me that GMail's online interface (which is free) is a better deal. If you want a client program then Apple's Mail, Thunderbird or EMClient are good options (and all free). In terms of comparable paid offerings Postbox is $49.99 for a *lifetime license*, Outlook is included with Office 365, and a ProVersion of EMClient is $59.99. All those free and paid clients can access GMail, though, yes, Mimestream does it very nicely and with some cool features -- but I guess the question is: Are those features worth $50 a year. I don't think so.

I used this app throughout its beta program and was waiting with much interest in getting the full release. It's a nice and mostly transparent window for the Gmail process and worked well, and I dislike using a browser for email, even though it is basically a browser underneath it all. At any rate, I am totally through with the app now, I don't do subscriptions. I understand the developer's reasons for doing this, but it means that, at least in my case, he's lost a customer.

MacUpdate: says this: Free Absolutely Free but if you go to the site this is what it says. Why will this app cost money? Mimestream's core business is developing high quality e-mail software, and doing this requires revenue. Instead of monetizing your e-mail data for advertising or market research purposes, we take a firm stance on privacy, and charge for our software.

Trying it since a few days and really love it. It's blazing fast and has also very good rendering also in dark mode.. It even looks as an Apple app. The best after Sparrow for Gmail users.
