ProtonVPN overview

ProtonVPN is designed with security as the main focus, drawing upon the lessons we have learned from working with journalists and activists in the field.

Features:
  • Secure core - Regular VPN services can be compromised if their servers are under surveillance. ProtonVPN prevents this by first passing user traffic through our Secure Core network in privacy-friendly countries like Switzerland and Iceland. Thus, even a compromised VPN endpoint server will not reveal your true IP address.
  • Perfect forward secrecy - ProtonVPN exclusively uses ciphers with Perfect Forward Secrecy, meaning that your encrypted traffic cannot be captured and decrypted later, even if an encryption key gets compromised in the future.
  • Swiss based - We are headquartered in Switzerland which has some of the world's strongest privacy laws. Switzerland is also outside of EU and US jurisdiction and is not a member of the fourteen eyes surveillance network.
  • No-log policy - ProtonVPN is a no logs VPN service. We do not track or record your internet activity, and therefore, we are unable to disclose this information to third parties.
  • Tor over VPN - ProtonVPN also integrates with the Tor anonymity network. With a single click, you can route all your traffic through the Tor network and access Onion sites.

Reliability: 1.0

App crashed everything on macOS after installing the system extensions and rebooting, had to force reboot my Macbook... I thought: my god, it's really a long time ago, I encountered such a crap! Can't even remember, must be years - so theoretically it can be a coincidence, unlikely though. Rather compatibility problems with Ventura 13.4 running on Intel, the version if relatively new, and bad / no testing (it costs money obviously, not always easy for small indy developer). I had similar experiences (though not quite so bad) with their Mail Bridge app in the earlier developement stages, like it seems they're releasing betas without specifying them as such; and apart from that, I'm very experienced with macOS from IT point of view. So for now I'd say: better to leave it. IMHO it's not at all acceptable for a security sensitive application like a VPN, if it's not properly tested and buggy, up to the point where it kills my OS. It's a pity, because I like their ideals, and Proton Mail is working more / less ok (apart from some small bugs in the iOS versions).

There's a nagging bug, months old, whereby the ProtonVPN client app will crash during formal "Sleep" mode. It is consistent at my end on my MBA M1 running 14.5 - 14.6.1. I've done extensive testing, reporting to Proton. But I have not found any cause other than ProtonVPN itself. I got tired of the problem and switched over to a different VPN I've also paid for, which does not have this problem. Last night I swapped back to ProtonVPN, put my MBA to sleep, and today the client app was found to have crashed. It's frustrating that Proton hasn't found a solution. So I'm back again to my other VPN, hoping Proton solve this bug.🤕

Can't download without signing up to their premium plans. VPN doesn't work with free Proton account. Based on comments here, I'll stick with Mullvad.

ALL or nearly all of the 5-star ratings are from one user which results in a highly inflated rating! For that reason alone I would AVOID!
