Tab Suspender overview

Tab Suspender reduces your memory and CPU usage by up to 60% and indirectly your battery consumption by automatically suspending the tabs you aren't using.

How many tabs do you have open that you have not used in hours or even days? That could be making your system run slower. With the Tab Suspender you can set how many minutes to wait before suspending an inactive tabs among many other options:

  • Whitelist urls or domains that you do not want to suspend (You can still manually suspend them by using the menu)
  • Show a screen shot of the page just before it was suspended
  • Detects tabs playing audio and will not suspend them if you don't want it (experimental)
  • Detects tabs that contain active forms and will not suspend them if you don't want it
  • Optionally, do not suspend tabs if on battery power or no network connections
  • Dark mode compatible!

After seeing "Webpage using significant energy" all the time and moving and clicking the mouse felt like I'm in a slow-motion video, I decided to install the Great Suspender that Chrome has and I use every day at work, but, lo and behold another extension that does not exist anymore in Safari thanks to their excellent decision of killing all the existing Safari extensions made until 2018?. After googling for a while I found myself here, so while I did not have the issue the previous user mentions, there are a couple of gotchas, especially if you are used to the Great Suspender. Pros: - It does in fact reduce the ram and cpu used by Safari. I don't know if it reaches the claimed "60%", but, there is a noticeable difference - It has some interesting configuration options - Dark mode! It's useful to scroll through the tabs at night without getting temporary blindness Neutral: - Premium: I'm used to free extensions in Chrome so this got my attention. On the other hand, all free options are fine for most users plus if you do go premium, it's a one time payment and you get it for less than $1 Cons: - There's this message "Restoring tabs" that shows up every time you start Safari, it's a bit annoying if you restart often. I get it's there for a reason so I assume Safari does something that other browsers don't? After the great extension massacre I appreciate more the ones that survived it so I won't punish the rating for this. There's room for improvement but in the end it does its job well. My mbp still overheats, but not enough to fry eggs anymore

To the developer: This software has yet to install properly. Each time I am prompted by a dialog to grant permission so this app can restore suspended tabs. When clicking on the Grant access button it starts the spinning gear and the button changes to a ghosted "Waiting..." The gear spins, the waiting never stops, and the app doesn't function. Furthermore, it appears the developer gave his own software a 5.0.
