What’s new in version 3.9.8

Today's maintenance release brings a few new items as well as many improvements and fixes. To more easily search for documents, you can use document or doc with a kind: search. We have also extended and improved the search syntax, adding, e.g., time components with relative dates, like modified:#6months, and more numerical range searches. For Markdown users, we've addressed some performance issues in editing and added a contextual menu command to jump to linked images in your databases. Sync now works more efficiently with sync stores, avoiding unnecessary actions. We have also fixed several issues with macOS' new operating system and, of course, continue to fine-tune reliability and performance for all supported systems.

New
  • A new Reveal Image command in the contextual menu of HTML views, e.g., rendered Markdown, jumps to images linked within a database.
  • The Extras sidebar now has a contextual menu with commands for sharing, services, etc.
  • When checking for updates, the alert shows a Release Notes button if no updates are available.
Improved
  • More robust and faster WYSIWYG editing and syntax coloring, e.g., of HTML and XML files. This can also alleviate potential stalls in Markdown documents with large fonts and many links.
  • The Document > Attachments inspector supports and displays Markdown image links using inline attributes, e.g., ![piglet.jpg](assets/piglet.jpg width="50%").
  • When using item links where the link text doesn't match the item's name, the location in the Document > Links inspector includes the actual document name.
  • Images are added to the database up to four times faster with the Tools > Import Online Markdown Images or the Files > Markdown > Copy images into database setting.
  • The Settings > Editing options, e.g., smart quotes, spellchecking, etc., are now supported in formatted notes and web archives.
  • Better support for viewing and using .webp images.
  • Item links with section parameters support anchors and IDs, making them more useful with web-based documents.
  • Improved conversion of PDF documents to Markdown.
  • Indexing and converting HTML-based file types to plain text more reliably ignore hidden elements.
  • Data > Convert > Duplicates to Replicants skips documents with a missing file.
  • The Navigation bar now shows the full location with the database's name of locally linked documents, e.g., when hovering over item links in rich text.
  • To save space, the window title no longer appears when using the Icon Only toolbar style on macOS Sequoia.
  • Improved updating and appearance of tabs.
  • The contextual menus used in documents are now organized more consistently across different file formats. This includes a more simplified menu for HTML, web archives, and formatted notes.
  • In the options of the File > Import > Files and Folders command, "Move Originals to Trash" has been renamed to Move Originals into Database.
  • Improved support for opening contextual menus via Control-Return on macOS Sequoia.
  • You can now use kind:document to limit results to only documents. An abbreviated form, kind:doc, and the original syntax, kind:any, can also be used.
  • More numerical search prefixes accept ranges: ratings, number of attachments, number of incoming or outgoing links, and custom metadata with number data types, e.g., rating:2-4 or mdprice:3-3.50.
  • The matches operator (:), can be used in date-based search with before (<), after (>), and is (==) operators, e.g., added:<=12-25-2023 searches for items added before or on the 25th of December, 2023.
  • Date-based searches using named dates, e.g., "Yesterday", can now use before/after (<, >) and before or on/after or on (<=, >=). For example, added.
  • The suffixes week, month, and year can be used with date-based searches, e.g., created:>2weeks. Note: Always use the plural form, e.g., 1days.
  • DEVONthink accepts files dropped from other devices via Universal Control.
  • The thumbnail creation of third-party file formats, e.g., Microsoft Word, uses Apple's latest framework.
  • Geolocations are now more reliably indexed.
  • Improved reliability, especially related to filesystem events.
  • More reliable unmounting of sparse images of encrypted databases in case of still opened Quick Look, image or video tabs.
  • The URL commands, x-devonthink://show-help or x-devonthink://showHelp, now support using anchors to open specific sections of the Help, e.g., x-devonthink://showHelp#inandout.
Improved (Pro)
  • Changes to custom metadata on indexed items are now immediately applied to the originals in the Finder. This allows indexed items to retain their metadata should they be removed and indexed again.
  • The File > Import > Website command now defaults to using https://.
  • Improved VoiceOver support for the Download Manager.
Improved (Sync)
  • More efficient syncing via sync stores between three or more devices, avoiding unnecessary actions.
  • When downloading pending items, related files such as linked images or annotation files should also be downloaded.
  • When synchronizing, RSS feed articles are merged if they have the same name and Settings > RSS > Skip identically named articles is enabled.
  • A warning is shown when trying to import a database into a Finder folder already containing a database with the same name.
Fixed
  • Editing Markdown documents with WYSIWYG could crash the application. Fixed.
  • Parsing Markdown could cause issues with WYSIWYG editing, as well as summarizing annotations or displaying them in the Document > Annotations inspector. Fixed.
  • Markdown section links were incorrectly formatted when copying them. Fixed.
  • Embedded Markdown images imported via Tools > Import Online Markdown Images or Settings > Files > Markdown > Import images to group had a data:// URL applied. Fixed.
  • Highlighting search results in plain text and Markdown didn't display correctly in dark mode. Fixed.
  • PDFs transcluded into Markdown documents via item links would open instead of just displaying. Fixed.
  • Copying links from one web-based document, e.g., HTML pages or formatted notes, into another web-based document could create invalid links. Fixed.
  • In HTML pages, relative links without a base URL didn't work correctly. Fixed.
  • The view icons in the Path bar didn't change the view. Fixed.
  • The focus ring appeared incorrectly when renaming items in Icon view. Fixed.
  • Token fields, e.g., tags or placeholders, could cause issues on macOS Sequoia. Fixed.
  • When using an advanced search, the raw query generated in the toolbar search field used the long date prefix, e.g., additionDate:#2days instead of added:#2days. Fixed.
  • Revealing items didn't work in Column view if the enclosing group was already selected. Fixed.
  • Unread documents in the Favorites section of the Navigate sidebar showed an item count of 1. Fixed.
  • When the Navigate sidebar was too narrow, the property icon and item count of deeply nested groups could overlap. Fixed.
  • A crash could occur when reloading RSS feeds while the Reading List, Import, or Extras sidebars were open. Fixed.
  • The Ratings controls and tooltips in the Info filter and Info > Generic inspector didn't work correctly on macOS Sequoia. Fixed.
  • The Content > Table of Contents inspector didn't always update when switching between light and dark modes. Fixed.
  • For linked Markdown section headers, the title incorrectly displayed in the Content > Table of Contents inspector. Fixed.
  • Relative image links in Markdown documents with percent-encoding wouldn't appear in the Document > Attachments inspector. Fixed.
  • In rare circumstances, groups or tags could incorrectly appear as possible filing locations in the See Also & Classify inspector. Fixed.
  • On macOS Sequoia, images received via sync didn't always get the data necessary for image comparison. Fixed.
  • On macOS Sequoia, if the clipboard contained plain text up to 1024 characters beginning with a word and a colon, e.g., subject:, the Data > New > With Clipboard command would incorrectly create a bookmark. Fixed.
  • Some non-conforming RSS JSON feeds could crash the application. Fixed.
  • Titles created by automation or manually, e.g., via scripts or the Sorter, had no limit to their length. Fixed.
  • The On Labelling event trigger didn't work or would sometimes apply to non-matching items. Fixed.
  • The Send Mail smart rule action didn't work correctly with Microsoft Outlook. Fixed.
Fixed (Pro)
  • The Imprinter settings could crash on rare occasion. Fixed.
Fixed (Sync)
  • After syncing modified package files, e.g., .rtfd documents, file system events could unnecessarily initiate another sync. Fixed.
  • Committing database changes could slow down sync. Fixed.

while I wanted to use "Mercedes" of Notes using, organizing and storing application, I better call it a proper and better comparison of my favorite Lincoln Town Car, which I used to own 1985-1994, which was and is The Best Automobile ever, together with Caddilac of that time. DEVONthink is not just an application of sorting and organizing. It's a powerful Engine that nothing comes even close. Even 10 stars is too little for its rating.

I have used this since 1.0 and can say it is the most useful organizer for large amounts of text and PDFs that I have found. I store several thousand 2000+ word articles and I can find anything I want as well as articles that are related that I would not have thought of. Indispensable!
