Rocket Typist overview

Rocket Typist is a modern Mac application, created with simplicity in mind. During a regular day, most of us type the same text over and over again, wasting an enormous amount of time in the process. Why not let your computer do some of that work for you? Once you have collected your snippets, you will never have to type them again. Here are just a few examples:

  • Commonly repeated phrases such as "How are you?"
  • Signatures with or without images
  • Current date and time
  • Names, addresses and other contact details
  • Hard to remember technical terms
  • Support replies to your customers
  • Code snippets for developers
Features:
  • Type an abbreviation and expend it into a snippet
  • Sync your snippets and category across all your devices using iCloud
  • Use macros to make your snippets more dynamic
  • Snippets can either be plain or rich text
  • Select snippets from your Mac's Touch Bar
  • Export and import snippets

What’s new in version 3.0.1

New Features
  • Text macros with identical labels are no longer displayed multiple times in the preview, resulting in a more compact preview / keyboard window.
  • Text alignment options have been added to the small toolbar for formatted snippets on the Mac.
  • Text undo has been added to the Mac snippet editor.
  • The email address field in the activation window is now more visible.
  • The preview now shows the exact key or shortcut name of a key macro.
  • When changing the title of a snippet in the macOS snippet list, the sort order isn't updated until you press enter.
  • When inserting a snippet with a textfield macro, the first textfield is now automatically focused.
Bug Fixes
  • The tabulator key macro did not work with certain configurations.
  • In certain instances, the snippet list wasn't sorting correctly by title.
  • In some applications using the cursor macro with other macros did not work as expected.
  • On iOS the Setapp integration did not work as expected.
  • Some emojis weren’t displayed correctly in the snippet menu.
  • Sometimes multiple editor windows were shown.
  • The snippet title on iPhone was causing a choppy animation.

I've been keeping an eye on this app to see if the dev would right the ship. It was last updated in November of 2020. The website teased version 3 later that year, then said it was taking longer than expected. OK, fine. We're now almost in March of 2022 and n-o-t-h-i-n-g. Not even a measly update. Not on the website, not on the dev's "blog", and not on twitter where he tells people to follow him for... updates. Do yourself a favor and buy apps from devs who stand behind their products and care about their customers.

I have RocketTypist with Setapp and I stopped using 30 days ago in favour of aText, which beats it down in every aspect. I found RT unreliable and just frustrating to use, the UI has been a wreck for a while and very little has been done to improve the user experience. Just get aText.

But wait, there’s more. iCloud synchronization is useless, but at least you can export snippets manually, right? WRONG. When you attempt a manual export, the app - you guessed it - crashes. Every. Single. Time. And like with iCloud sync, only a fraction of your snippets actually get exported. In my case, 13…out of 427. You must be kidding me. I didn’t care to check whether the lucky 13 were entirely exported. Since iCloud sync results in missing abbreviations and/or snippet text, it wouldn’t surprise me if export was just as bad. ocket Typist if a is half-assed and half baked. It’s *you* who should be ashamed to dare charge people for such a useless product, Witt Software. Needless to say, still zero answer from the developer. I just sent him yet another message requesting a refund. Not holding my breath. On a side note, I have submitted 2 1/2 star for Rocket Typist. For some reason, the rating mysteriously disappears every time and only the review remains… unlike all 5 stars ratings, perfect score that this joke of an app still enjoys somehow. Trying to submit another rating with this review. Shooting for 1 star this time, just to see what happens. A joke from start to finish.

Updated to 2.2. Nothing is fixed. iCloud sync is still a mess (see below for more info) and the app crashes every time you uncheck "enable iCloud synchronization". Go ahead, try it...
