Drive Scope overview

Drive Scope is an advanced SMART drive-testing and health-warning application. Building on the improvements to the SMART check in TechTool Pro, Drive Scope not only provides early warning when a drive is on the path to failure, but provides a deep dive into the health of the drive. See what errors have occurred, and when, along with whether the errors are temporary or an indicator of overall failure. You can even trigger the drive's internal testing to run manually, providing instant access to up-to-date drive health information

What’s new in version 1.2.18

  • Fixed a health status icon mismatch.
  • Updated the Vendor ID database for NVMe Data table.
  • Other minor fixes and enhancements.

Only an absolute SAP would spend $4.99, let alone $49.99 for this. SMART isn't that great to begin with, varies with vendor, and is subject to interpretation. Please check out "Smart Utility" here on MacUpdate. (It's also worthless, but half the price.) Scroll down to the review by Mcr on 29 December, 2018, to see why so-called 'SMART' software really isn't worth much. Spend your $49.99 on a backup hard drive or, if you must, sink it into TechTool Pro, which has its own SMART test. And check out what Micromat's ChristianP wrote below on 22 September, 2017: "Hopefully, we'll be able to integrate the full feature set of Drive Scope into a future version of Techtool Pro." Two years later, that integration still hasn't been done. That should tell you something. -SB

Drive Scope looked interesting, as a way to monitor the MANY drives connected to my iMac. Fortunately, I noticed this footnote early in my investigation: † Drives in RAID enclosures not supported. My system has two OWC 4-bay RAID enclosures, running in JBOD mode (Just a Bunch Of Drives). So Drive Scope is useless for me. The moment this RAID restriction is lifted, I'll add Drive Scope as a companion to TechTool Pro.

It would be helpful to provide a trial version. Without trying it, how do we know that is worth $19.99?

This product is an insult to TecToolPro 9 users. If TechTool Pro 9 is a complete all-in-one diagnostic tool for Mac, why sell Drive Scope as a stand alone app instead of integrating it into Tech Tool Pro? Or is Tech Tool Pro so feeble that you have room to introduce multiple new diagnostic tools? Prediction: Drive Scope won't sell well, and it will undermine conviction that TechToolPro is as comprehensive as your advertising implies. Lose-lose. At any rate, you have undermined this long-time customer's faith that your company is interested in producing a single all-purpose diagnostic tool. It now appears that you want to milk your customers by getting them to purchase one "complete" and (ultimately) several "stand alone" diagnostic apps. Given your marketing strategy, I think I will look elsewhere than to micromat in the future. Did you even consider this in company deliberations before marketing Direct Scope? I fear you did, and decided on the basis of how to rake in the most money. I'm a customer for now, but not for long. Sincerely, David Leibowitz
