NotePlan overview

NotePlan is designed to make your task planning more productive. It solves problems like bloated, ever-growing to-do lists.

  • Modern Writing - Enjoy a full writing area with Markdown and injected flavour for productivity.
  • Calendar Notes - A calendar shows you where the action is. Jump right into a day to manage it by writing notes into each day.
  • Backlog Notes - Save away your backlogs and general notes behind the daily planning and apart from the calendar.
Features
  • Full, modern writing tool included for every day of a month - NotePlan will give you the convenience of a modern writing editor supporting markdown. Add formatting to your task lists and notes to keep it better organized.
  • Monthly calendar overview with color-coded daily note content - See a summary of your notes and color coded lists in a monthly calendar view. Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and quickly jump into a day to review or edit it. The calendar will also show you, if you missed out on some tasks, so nothing important slips from your mind.
  • Schedule tasks to stay organized - If you couldn't finish a task, don't leave it unmanaged on the list. Re-schedule it to another day. Or, if you manage a backlog, schedule a todo directly from there onto your calendar.
  • Backlogs, drafts, bug lists or just text notes, apart from the calendar - Some information is not related to a day and should be kept separated from the calendar. Like bug lists or project backlogs. They can be managed in NotePlan and scheduled directly into the calendar, when required. Notes can be organized by tagging them. In the overview you can filter your notes by tags.
  • Your notes are not saved on our servers. You will find them safe and sound in your iCloud Drive.
  • Integrations to useful apps like iCalender, Reminders, and more are available.

What’s new in version 3.15.1

Following up with the main release, we did some polishing on the folded tasks, bug fixing, performance improvements, and sync maintenance.

New
  • Added an API call to OpenAI: `NotePlan.ai(prompt, [file1, file2])`, which becomes very useful in templates. It can read the content of the specified files and work on them using the prompt to return say a random bullet point or the next open task from a note.
Improved
  • Updated the design of the unfold button ("...") behind folded lines.
  • Folding button positioning fixed, so it appears also close left of indented tasks.
Fixed
  • Folding issue was fixed when headings and task folding were mixed.
  • Performance issues fixed with loading and updating events and reminders in the background that led to high memory and CPU usage due to deadlocks.
  • Plugin download issues fixed.
Sync
  • Fixed issues with encryption.
  • Fixed issues when reuploading notes on one device without re-downloading them from scratch on other devices.

Yes, it is a subscription (and an expensive one at that), but I couldn't do my job (High School Principal) half as well without it. Every now and then I look at the alternatives, but none of them gels with the way I work as fluidly as NotePlan does. I do all my daily planning, meeting agendas, phone call notes, etc. in my daily note, but then I can also link to my other notes. It has Apple Calendar and Reminders built-in, so you can also use it with Siri. It may not be for everyone but this is easily the most used app on my Mac.

There are so so many other options. Beaver-Note is open source and offers the same features, is multi-platform, and their cloud sync is cheaper. I use Joplin, also the features. YMMV.

It doesn't look like MacUpdate has been keeping this app up to date. It's now up to version 3.8 and is still actively developed. Version 3 is a big upgrade (in terms of functionality and price, now being a subscription), but I couldn't live without it.

With the new 'markdown live rendering' (i.e. you see rich text, not markdown even though that's what it's using), this great task management app has become even more user-friendly. The same markdown rendering is also now live on the iPhone/iPad apps as well.

Solid app, regularly updated. Bought this a few months ago and am slowly migrating my Todoist tasks to it.
