goPanel overview

goPanel is an incredibly intuitive OS X app for the management of web servers, an alternative to existing control-panel apps you install on Unix-based servers for web hosting. Easy-to-install and configure Apache or Nginx webserver, PHP, MySQL, FTP, domains, free SSL certs and emails on your server. goPanel lets you easily connect and manage unlimited Linux servers.

Features
  • Add and manage unlimited servers (VPS or dedicated)
  • Install, configure and manage: Apache or Nginx, PHP, FTP (Pure-FTPd), MySQL or MariaDB, Mail Server to get each of your servers ready to host domains
  • PHP and Apache on/off from selection of modules
  • Unlimited MySQL/MariaDB users and databases, domains, ftp accounts and emails
  • Unlimited free SSL** certs issued by Let’s Encrypt certificate authority
  • Fail2Ban intrusion prevention software Install and Configure
  • Setup scheduled cron jobs
  • Setup backup for your files or databases
  • View server logs and block IP's
  • Rollback up to 50 earlier versions of your config files in case you need to
  • System updates - keep your linux server up to date
  • 3rd-party scripts:
    • WP-CLI + One-click Wordpress installer
    • Composer (application-level package manager)
    • PHPMyAdmin(database manager)
    • Webmailer (roundcube)

goPanel works perfect with Amazon instances and Digital Ocean droplets as long as you use a Linux distribution we support. Make sure your Linux server does not have any of the services installed and you install all services from the goPanel app: migration from servers with existing services is not yet possible.

Neat cPanel alternative, easy enough to use with cheap VPSs. But the most common 'pro' setup for a web hosting service is to have BOTH Nginx and Apache setup together (with Nginx as a proxy for the sites being hosted by Apache). This enables developers to gain some of Nginx speed while retaining the wide compatibility offered by .htaccess file support required by many CMSs - goPanel will not setup anything like this. As a consequence, the 'default' goPanel installation is not as performant as what you get from competing services - like MOSS - which are much faster (and sometimes, free). If goPanel is directed at 'non-techie' users, then it needs a better manual, more guided setup, and more options - people want to use things other than Wordpress. Loose 1 star for poor documentation (assuming it's directed at non-technical users). Loose 1 star for lack of auto-installers for anything other than Wordpress. Loose 1 star for setting up a sluggish system by default, which lacks serious optimisation (specially if installing a resource hog like Wordpress).

I used to really like goPanel, but then had a server just crap out and become unrecoverable with goPanel. Though it looks pretty in the screenshots, using the interface is slow and clunky. There are progress wheels all over the place because the developer hasn't put effort into optimization and caching where possible. Overall, the app feels like it's held together with duct tape and bubble gum. Features don't reliably work, and you will find yourself constantly double checking that you didn't break something. goPanel offers so much promise, but fails to deliver the user experience it should. The on-the-server equivalent of goPanel is called CentOS Web Panel. It's free, it's awesome, and hasn't caused a catastrophic failure like goPanel did.

This app is AWESOME. It's such a timesaver and makes managing multiple VPS a breeze. I'd been looking for something like this for a long, long time, but it's seemingly the only alternative. Of course, like any software, it's not absolutely flawless and has the occasional hiccup (the app itself, doesn't affect the server at all), but overall it's very stable and reliable. Still left on my wishlist: Domain staging/cloning. That would be such a killer feature if had a Wordpress sync/cloning option (Database, files, etc.)

after a long search for a good solution, close to giving up, I stumbled upon goPanel. This s*** really works out of the box! Saved me a lot of time and I couldn't be happier!

I left a review previously, but for some reason I am not able to edit it. So I am writing a new one. After having attempted to use GoPanel to configure a server from start to finish, I must drop my rating to 2 stars.

I am using a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 VM on Microsoft Azure.
GoPanel crashes often whilst trying to perform tasks, essentially rendering it too unreliable to depend on. This is a pity, as it obviously has great potential.

I've taken the matter up with the developer, and received only a few terse replies, through which he eventually indicated it might be crashing when GP has an issue connecting to the server during an operation. Which, to me, suggest it doesn't have adequate fault handling routines, because a slow or unresponsive server connection should not cause the app to crash.

I've attempted to get an update from the developer as to when he is likely to implement decent fault handling, and after a more than a month, I've heard nothing at all back.

As I paid for a license to this app, I find this rather disappointing. I can only assume he put it into the "too hard, too busy" basket.
