Boot Camp Backup overview

Paragon Boot Camp Backup is the first backup solution for Windows OS resided on Mac computers under OS X. Apple Boot Camp is a utility that allows you to run Windows OS on a Mac computer. Mac OS X includes built-in backup tools, but they do not support the NTFS-file system and work on the file level only which negatively effects on computer performance. Our program operates on the sector-level and allows backing up an NTFS partition of Boot Camp and creating incremental chains, where each new increment describes the changes between the current state of the backup object and the previous state.

Key Features and Benefits:
  • Sector-level backup -- to create file system backups;
  • Backup to VD -- to store your data in a virtual disk. You can mount this disk and access the partition data at a point in time, when backup was done;
  • Incremental imaging -- to only back up changed sectors. Incremental imaging improves backup efficiency and reduces storage disk space required by the image;
  • Schedule backup -- to automate regular backup operations;
  • Selective restore -- to easy extract files and folders from a backup image without the need for restoring an entire image;
  • Windows migration -- to migrate Windows OS from one Mac computer to another;
  • Pinned archive state - to pin the archive or increment state and to be sure that you can always go back to it. This archive will never be changed or merged automatically;
  • Support for Windows installed on separate disk;
  • Enhanced restore to another Mac;
  • Paragon Updater.

I have previously had success using Paragon's Boot Camp Backup to backup and restore my Windows 7 partition to a new solid state drive. Recently, I upgraded my 250 GB SSD to a 500 GB SSD. In preparation I used this application to backup my now Windows 10 partition on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.2. The interface is divided into two tabs, Backup Boot Camp and Restore. Their functions are self-explanatory. The former allows options to enable scheduling and to edit the amount of incremental backups to keep. The latter allows options to mount backup images and to merge incremental backups. The backup process was simple and quick. You select the source, my Windows 10 partition in this case, and then the destination to save the backup image. There's also an option to check and repair the file system before backup, making it unnecessary to boot into Windows and run the commands yourself. The backup image is mountable allowing one access to all backed up data, which can easily be extracted from the image. The restore process wasn't as simple, though it wasn't difficult by any means. I first used Time Machine to restore my Macintosh partition to the new SSD. I then used Boot Camp Assistant to create a new Windows partition. I had some trouble getting Boot Camp Backup to recognize my backup image in the Restore tab. I found that I oddly had to select the Backup Boot Camp tab and select the image as the destination in the save as prompt. Only then was I successfully able to restore to the newly created Windows partition. Afterwards I booted into Windows 10, but I was met with a black screen. The operating system was unable to boot. I had to use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows 10 usb install disk. After booting from the usb install disk I navigated to troubleshooting options and opened a command prompt. I executed these three commands: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr Bootrec.exe /FixBoot Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd After a reboot, Windows 10 successfully booted. There was no need for reactivation. Everything was there as if it had always existed on the new SSD. This is thanks to its sector-level backup method. I was satisfied. Paragon's Boot Camp Backup met and exceeded my expectations. Best of all, it is free (for now).

Hmm, based on the description, it would APPEAR that this app can be used to accomplish the same thing as WinClone, and is free. My objective is to increase the size of a Bootcamp partition without having to reinstall Windows. I'm hesitant to try it because I've had horrible experience with other Paragon software, like CampTune and NTFS, both products caused my hard drive to become unbootable. Although I guess in this case if it corrupts then I would have had to reinstall regardless anyways.
