Hocus Focus overview

Hocus Focus takes care of clearing away window clutter in the background as you work. By hiding the applications you're not using, it helps keep you distraction free and focused on the stuff that matters.

What’s new in version 1.3

Version 1.3:
Improvements:
  • Added a grace period of a few seconds when changing profiles to avoid immediate hiding of windows when cycling through profiles
  • Fixes an issue that could cause the "Choose Application" window to appear on versions of OS X using non-English languages

Reliability: 1.0

In Big Sur it would occasionally lose track of which applications are visible, so I'd have to restart it. I just upgraded to Monterey, now it reports a crash when starting up. It then runs for a while, but exits immediately if I try to open the settings. Which makes it impossible to disable "Start at login".

I like it, but at times it is not reliable, it intermittently doesn't hide apps. It stops working until the app is restarted. The interface is a bit confusing as well... The word DISABLED is displayed in the menubar app no matter what profile is chosen. Please fix it, its a great app.

This app is great! Someone mentioned the app Houdini to me. I hadn't heard of that app before either.. After looking around a bit I found it's successor in Hocus Focus. It's simple enough and does a great job and just quietly getting clutter off your desktop and removing distractions. Totally worth donating to the cause.

I just " discovered " this application and find it excellent in my Mac OS 10.10.5 Yosemite.

However, it is a bit tricky for me to understand/use because the developer has not provided a read me manual. I am somewhat slow at my age to catch on what is going on with the app. Also, not sure at this time if there is reset to default button.

Also nice that it is free because i am on a very tight money budget. Even those Apple 1 or more dollar apps are more than i can afford to spend especially when there is no try before you buy versions.

I have purchase a few of those $1 apple applications only to discover they are not what i want or require.

I was a user of Camouflage but the developer is extremely slow to fix bugs and update compatibility so I tried this. It's better than Camouflage, not just because it works but it's free (even though I would easily have paid for this). The only thing I wish it had is "single-app mode" option so only one app would at a time, automatically hiding any other open apps; that would make for the ultimate clean workspace.

Many moons ago, I fell in love with Spirited Away, which was an app hider as well. However, it ceased development and upkeep, and no longer worked well with Yosemite. Hocus Focus, though, is a superb replacement! I've been using it for several hours, now, and it works great. I can even configure the time before an app hides on a per-app basis! How awesome is that! Minus one half star for no help and no manual. If you want to prevent an app from hiding, merely drag the selector all the way to the left, for "zero" and it won't hide.
