Disk Xray overview

Disk Xray is a disk-usage statistics viewer, duplicate files and folders finder and cleanup tool for OS X. It performs three fundamental functions, and it performs them extremely well. It also provides you maximum security, restoring all files if you removed something accidentally.

Features
  • Folder Scanner - Folder scanner is a visual disk/folder analyser that enables you to spot large files and folders on your disk - be it an entire hard disk or a subfolder - giving a sorted breakup of just where your disk space is going. At a glance you can identify which folders are the space hogs and just what is in them by successively drilling down.
  • Duplicate Files Finder - Duplicate Files Detector frees up a disk space by finding and deleting duplicate files and folders thereby giving you a chance to recover gigabytes of your disk space. This scan can reveal just how many copies of the same document or photo or other type of file you have saved, scattered through your disk. All duplicate files are checked byte-by- byte to give you 100% guarantee they are exact copies.
  • Disk Cleaner - Disk Cleaner speeds up your computer and by finding and removing temporary files on your computer. This includes the obvious choices of the Trash and your downloads folder, and also includes locations you may not otherwise think to purge or even know where to find - application logs, web browser caches and cookies, application caches and an ever-growing list of email attachments stored locally but never cleaned. You can also set it to find all big files on your disk. Decide how old files you want to remove - one week, one month or one year.

This is not a review per se, it is a discussion of the class of software to which this program belongs. As a public service to the MacUpdate community, I've found as many of these "cleaner" apps on this website as I could and listed them them below. (I did a search for 'cleaner'.) If MacUpdate will let me, I intend to post this every time a new or updated version of one of these things shows up on this site. There are 36 in the list, and it seems like new entries in the 'Mac cleaner' market space pop up every day, metastasizing like a cancer. Unfortunately, more is not better. They are all of dubious value. Many have no reviews at all. Many have what look to be essentially fake 5-star reviews with no useful commentary. Many -- probably the most accurate and honest -- have negative reviews, by users who have been burned by them. Most of the developers' descriptions boast about what a great job they do, but the truth is, there are no good, comprehensive, head-to-head reviews of these programs by impartial 3rd parties. True experts in macOS maintenance advise against using any of them, because in general they serve little useful purpose and they can easily do more harm than good. Macs simply do not need "cleaning." (See for example: https://www.thesafemac.com/the-myth-of-the-dirty-mac/) Some of these programs are notorious for being little more than malware. The user is well-advised to read any program documentation and make a RELIABLE BACKUP before attempting any changes. If I have missed any programs that should be on the list, please leave a comment and let me know. I will rate all these programs with one star, probably one more than they deserve. And I would appreciate comments. If you disagree, please speak up. But if all you can come up with is 5 stars and a sentence or two saying that program X is great and I don't know what I'm talking about, please save your breath. No one here will take you seriously. And I apologize for the almost unreadable formatting, a severe limitation of MacUpdate itself, which compresses maximum text into minimum space, leaving no whitespace for readability. :: BEGIN LIST: : Aooro : App Cleaner & Uninstaller : AutoTrash : AweCleaner : CleanGeeker : Clean Me : Cleaner One Pro : CleanMyMac X : Combo Cleaner : Disk Aid : Disk Cleaner : Disk Cleaner Pro : Disk Health : DiskKeeper Advanced Cleaner : DiskKeeper Cleaner - Modern : DiskKeeper Pro : Disk Xray : Doctor Disk Cleaner : HD Cleaner : MacBooster : Mac Cleaner : MacClean : MacClean360 : MacCleaner Pro : MacCleanse : MacEnizer : Mojave Cleaner : PowerMyMac : Pro Disk Cleaner : Quick Cleaner : Sensei : Stellar SpeedUpMac : TrashMe 3 : Washing Machine : WeCleanse : Wise Mac Care :: END LIST : :: The only system maintenance tool I recommend is TinkerTool System, a true bargain priced at only $14 for a single license. TinkerTool System is a an exceptional piece of quality engineering, safe when used properly, and superbly documented, with in-depth tutorials for every option. As for the rest, listed above, it is safe to say that nobody who really knows what they're doing with Macs and macOS will touch them. Don't get sucked in by a pretty interface. You may very well regret it. -SB

Sure, it’s only $10, but that’s a couple of burgers and fries. Also, the burgers and fries don’t claim to do something they don’t. The first time I tried to search for duplicates on a 3TB external disk, DiskXRay chocked about 5% through the drive. Apple’s Force Quit Applications showed that DiskXRay was “paused,” though how I paused it is a mystery. And if I paused it, why can’t I un-pause it? I couldn’t. I had to force quit. I made sure the 3TB disk was OK (disk utility) and ran OnyX, then restarted. Threw all the plsts away, too, just to make sure. Tried DiskXRay again. The program is slow and if you click anywhere it doesn’t like, such as a scroll bar, you get the SBOD (Spinning Beach Ball of Doom). Sometimes it’s doing this in lieu of giving you a status, or maybe this IS the status. Sometimes the SBOD stops. Sometimes it doesn’t. Oops, it’s hung again. Or has it? After a while, I realize that it just takes forever to think things through and may be just “pausing” for a few minutes. Nope, this time it seems to have really just hung again requiring yet another forced quit. Aside from it being slow and buggy, it lacks some features one would expect, like a “don’t show this again” button so you don’t have to reassure it you really do want to trash yet another group of files. As a beta, it’s promising. As a product to pay for, no. Was running this on an iMac under 10.9.5
