Perfect Rename overview

Perfect Rename lets users quickly generate file names using easy-to-understand building blocks of information. Look at the real-time results, hit 'Go'.

Perfect Rename gives you the following smart blocks to build powerful naming rules:
  • Text (just what you think it is)
  • Counters (global, total, per file type, arabic and roman numbers)
  • Original File Meta Data (Name, Extension, Size, Modification Date, Creation Date, Parent Folder)
  • Date
  • Image Metadata (More than 150 tags spanning from EXIF, over GPS to Camera Maker-Specific)
  • Audio Metadata (Common ID3 tags)
  • Video Metadata (what ID3 are to audio, this is to video: access duration, artist, etc.)
  • CSV (so you have a coma-sparated values file and want to plug those into your file name? Go nuts.)

I can see how this app would appeal since it appears to be pretty easy to create your own renaming templates. However, and I don't mean to discredit this app, I find that ingestamatic https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/40776/ingestamatic works quite well for those who don't mind a few advanced features. Ingestamatic works from the top of your list by launching automatically (by specifying in Apple's Image Capture app) when you plug your camera or SD card into your Mac. At its basic, it will preview the latest images and, upon request, will download those images to a a specified folder, sorting the images into sub-folders by date. To rename images, it's fairly easy to build a macro (I know, that's a scare word!) that will intercept the images and rename them according to how you've created the macro. Mine have the format of (date of image) + (shoot) + (name) + (index) where shoot is the theme of those photos (my yard), where name is the name of the photographer, and index is an incrementing number. Shoot and Name need to to input before ingesting. There are many IPTC variables that can be assigned to the name as well.

Love this app! Whenever I bring photos off my camera I run it through Perfect Rename and easily add in all the extra text info I need. I hope this company comes out with a Perfect Resize App or add on so that I could also bulk change file formats and image sizing in one easy step! MacUpdate didn't see the update automatically, but choosing update in the app worked for me.

Perfect Rename is an easy to use renaming tool, but maybe some features have been sacrificed for simplicity. As it is, replacing text is very basic (without Regex-support). Trying to rename mp3 files by tag info revealed that track and disc numbers don't make it into the into the file name. And I really missed the standard "year"-mp3 tag which cannot be selected at all. Apart from that, Perfect Rename is able to import file names from a csv-file and supports a bunch of meta information tags for image files.
