Markster overview

Markster keeps your internet bookmarks in a central store. People use Markster because either:

  • The internal bookmarks facilities (Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, Favorites Bar, etc.) in their web browser(s) do not meet their feature expectations.
  • They use more than one web browser, and prefer to keep all their bookmarks in a separate app, independent of the web browsers, instead of syncing the browsers' internal bookmarks facilities together.

When Markster users want to visit a bookmark they have previously stored, or add a new bookmark, instead of reaching for the Bookmarks Bar or Bookmarks Menu in the browser, they bring up Markster's Floating Menu. Markster provides three ways to do that:

  • Global Keyboard Shortcut, for example Cmd-Shift-D.
  • Dock Menu
  • Status Menulet (right side of Menu Bar)

The keyboard shortcut and/or status menulet are enable/disabled in Markster's preferences.

What’s new in version 3.1.9

  • The Delete All Content function no longer deletes hard folders, which caused errors to occur later.
  • Replaced old code, which could resolve rare issues.  (Replaced some uses of BSJSONAdditions with NSJSONSerialization, calendar dates are no longer encoded with NSKeyedArchiver to get from browser extensions to main app.)
  • Removed the Upgrade Insecure Bookmarks feature because it rarely upgrades any bookmarks nowadays – Any sites which still do not support https are probably going to die before they do.  So using this feature has become pretty much a waste of users’ time.
  • In the document window, tab Reports > Verify, clicking the little magnifying glass buttons now set the predicate as expected when the Reports > Find tab is opened, as it worked in previous versions of macOS.
  • Now works properly with current version of Opera web browser.  (Running Opera 103 or 104 may create a Default profile subfolder, as Chrome and Edge have, and move your profile data into it.)
  • Improved part of the process of importing from and exporting to Safari, so that it will no longer hang and eventually fail with Error 772041 on some Macs.  (Now uses a system function instead of a unix tool to get the machine heardware UUID that is used for file locking.)
  • Now acknowledges and supports multiple profiles in the Vivaldi web browser.
  • Updated drag and drop code to remove methods which have been deprecated by Apple.
  • No longer migrates syncing configuration when upgrading from version 2.4.8 and earlier, which was 7 years ago.

What does Bookmacster that Markster doesn't ? I'm playing with both, and can not figure out the difference between them.

Two users have reported that Markster crashes on launch after the upgrade to version 3. We are working on this. In the meantime, we have a quick workaround, which is given in the forum on our website: https://sheepsystems.com/discuss/YaBB.pl?num=1669662374/0#1 Sincerely, Jerry Krinock, developer

I’m constantly switching between Safari, Firefox and Brave whenever a new version is released, so this eliminates the need to export bookmarks from one browser and import to another. Now that I’ve gotten used to saving all new bookmarks to Markster, and going to the menubar to visit a saved site, it makes things a lot easier to change browsers without missing any bookmarks. The initial set-up can be slightly confusing with the many sort and save options, but overall it’s a great app that I’ve come to rely on.

Having found this developer's previous bookmarking tools extremely useful and reliable, I happily chose Markster when I realized that my FF set was growing too quickly to make it easily manageable. I was not disappointed. Markster is extremely fully-featured - the most extensive software of its kind that I came across when researching bookmark managers. It's also very robust and reliable. Reasonably-priced too, the developers are very responsive to questions, explaining anything which isn't immediately obvious (thanks to its rich feature set) in the Help that comes with it. Most impressive, perhaps, is the way in which the design has anticipated the way that users are likely actually to work when collecting and using bookmarks. It's hard to think of an operation that's not included in Markster - or imagine how it could have been implemented better. Surely the market leader.

I see 3 different bookmarking apps that Sheep Systems makes here. I thought it was quite clear at first what I was looking at, but once I started reviewing the products I became somewhat uncertain. @Developer, which of your products most closely compares with Pins (http://pinsapp.com)?
