ColoFolXS overview

ColoFolXS is a compact icon tool specialized in coloring folders. Just drop one or more folders to a color cell on the main panel.

Or use the app as a Finder:

  1. Right-click (ctrl-click) a folder in the Finder.
  2. Select "ColoFolXS" (or use a shortcut assigned in the Finder Services Preferences).
  3. Click a color cell on the ColoFolXS main panel.
Main Features
  • The color cells are editable: change color, add, remove and reorder.
  • You can also set icons in the cells to attach them as they are.
  • If Finder tags are linked to the cells in the Setting, they are added or removed together when you use ColoFolXS.
  • Shortcuts are assignable to the removal function and each ColoFolXS cell.

For more details, please refer Help available in the app.

What’s new in version 2.2.2

This little app does a simple job perfectly: it enables you to colorise icons (files and folders). It gives you wide control over colours, and optionally enables you to synchronise them with system tags. Personally I prefer to keep the two layers of colour coding (tags and icons) separate, and apply them only with keyboard shortcuts. Version 1.4.2 of ColFolXS should optionally run without appearing in the Dock, which makes it even slicker. The colours can also be applied by invoking the app as a service. For years I used iconXprit by the same dev. This app does less, but it does all I need, more simply and reliably.

I bought ColoFolXS in an effort to restore some of the functionality of label colors to Mavericks. The tags in OS X 10.9 are not as effective, in my opinion, for marking items as labels were. Of course, it's just like Apple not to give us a choice since usability dropped off their priorities and principles lists with the advent of OS X 10.7 Lion. ColoFolXS is a partial solution. It can add color folder icons to your folders; unfortunately, if that folder has a custom icon of any kind, the color is not added on top of the folder icon but instead replaces it. As well, the colored folder will not add its color to the whole line as labels did - you may see this as an advantage or a drawback depending on your own preferences. ColoFolXS can link folder colors to tag colors, but it does not seem to do so reliably. As I say, it's a partial solution, but it's not an expensive one.
