CinePlay overview

CinePlay is a media player for video professionals complete with timecode overlays, markers, masking, safe areas, and cloud playback support. It is ideal for dailies, portfolios, client feedback and mobile note-taking.

It supports modern video codecs in MOV or MP4 containers, along with WAV, MP3, M4A and AIFF audio.

  • Timecode - All timings are specified in timecode notation and CinePlay can read timecode stored in a movie file. Add a draggable timecode overlay to the movie or view it in a resizable timecode window.
  • Markers - Add markers during playback and export them to a range of common marker formats.
  • Safe Areas - View customizable 4:3 and 16:9 title and action safe areas over your movie.
  • Ganging - Sync two or more videos together to compare shots side-by-side.
  • Playlists - Create and play back M3U playlists.
  • Cloud Integration - Play cloud videos from Kollaborate, sync comments with your colleagues, and even take part in live group note-taking sessions.
  • Synced Sessions - Allow colleagues to control your playhead remotely, via Kollaborate.
  • Timecode Sync - Sync timecode to Cut Notes and other applications for easy note taking.
  • Free for Kollaborate Users - All cloud functionality is free for Kollaborate users.

Value: 4.0

Not inexpensive for a utility, but useful and the pricing is fair and not absurd like Telestream's Switch (from $19 to $729 for HEVC playback and markers).

Features: 5.0

Strength is in the features. I need to do visual comparisons of different compression parameters – CinePlay makes it possible with ganged playback throughout the video, including sync and drag and drop. For those who like to create notes on a single video before an edit, CinePlay has markers, notes, loop playback. All of this is possible in DaVinci Resolve or FCPX but sometimes one just yearns for a simple player with notation and timecode. CinePlay utility reminds me of QuickTime 7 which was fabulous software but doesn't run any more.

cool, the hover thumbnail is the best idea ever, but why not make it WAY bigger? sometimes you really doubt whether the developers really use their own software. In dire need of a UI / UX upgrade. the in and out handles look terrible .

Why a .pkg when the only thing in it is the app? Was interested in this, but won't install 10.9 to try it. Too bad the dev is on the "its the newest, it must be the best" bandwagon.
