Well, it's April 2022 and after about 10 YEARS of Mac users screaming at Microsoft to allow OneNote to have local copies of their documents on their computer (a feature Windows OneNote users have had from day 1) that day has finally arrived. That's always been one of the minimum requirements before I even try this software. Does somebody know if this new version also requires a Microsoft account and if your notes are also always required to be stored in Microsoft's cloud? Both of those would also be deal breakers for me. I want the software to be fully stand-alone - I'm happy to pay for software but never if the developer data mines me.

It's not free as you have to pay for storage. And while some might find it's cross-platform Windows and Mac enough, I didn't. I wanted an Evernote clone and finally came across Joplin which runs on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Shared storage can be Joplin's own or another vendors or even your own local network storage. You can enable End-To-End encryption and there are plugins to customize various features. The files are MD format and portable. You can also use an external 3rd-party editor. There's a reason I give money to the developer's Patreon page. I want it to succeed. Pity Zittlr's dependence on Electron crashes it on my MacOS system as it runs fine everywhere else.

OneNote is great note taking app, but when there are many notes, it cannot sync properly with mobile apps that decrease reliability on it.

I used to really like onenote 2016 but I just bought a mac and the onenote version is awful. No functionality, annoying navigation, no option to quickly add a quicknote, I can't find any of my previously made quicknotes. Absolutely ridiculous how much worse this is than the previous version. I've been using Onenote for about 4 years but now I am forced to find a different app for my notes as this is intolerable

Can truly recommend it. Using it for more than 4 years and without any horrible consequences))
Its something that you can use between various devices (iOS and Android, for example)
There's just one thing that makes me sick of: sometimes, when you copying text from OneNote, it can paste as plain text and picture simultaneously
