You Need a Budget overview

You Need a Budget is easy-to-use budget software paired with a powerful methodology.

The software is built around the YNAB Method, which is comprised of our Four Rules. These Four Rules help you break the paycheck to paycheck cycle, get out of debt, and save more money faster. Where other software packages tend to have years of feature creep, YNAB offers exactly what you need: a simple, straightforward system to manage your money. And YNAB offers fantasitic support, including video tutorials, free live budgeting classes, and an active supportive forum community.

The published price is that of a full-year subscription. Pricing information can be found here.

What’s new in version 4.3.855

Version 4.3.855:
  • Fixed a bug where starting balance calculations from debt accounts weren't being included in some calculations.
  • Got YNAB 4 to play along better with the new YNAB along the lines of some version checks.
  • Added the ability to include debt payment categories in mobile device's category selection.
  • Fixed a bug where you couldn't move forward to the next month, which makes budgeting for the next month tremendously difficult.
  • Touched up some timeout errors around connecting to our third-party direct import provider (Finicity).

It's the principle that counts, not the software. "YNAB Method" is just a rip-off of Dave Ramsey's methodology laid out in his book "Total Money Makeover" and "Financial Peace University," both of which are awesome. You should look into his stuff first and foremost. As for the tool itself, YNAB can't handle multi-currencies, and it comes with a high price tag for which you have to pay yearly. Search for "Zero-based budgeting Excel template," and you will find many Excel templates that do the same thing, only with far more flexibility to suit your unique needs and without having to pay a penny for it. There is no vendor lock-in, either.

Great product – the best money management app I've come across. I'd give it four or five stars if that was all that needed to be considered. However, I don't trust the company that produces it, though. It's priced here as $50 – which is a yearly, renewable subscription. The link about pricing takes you to the YNAB site, which also prices it at $50. However, try to actually buy a license, and the price suddenly rises to $60 – which you only discover after using it on a trial basis. It should also be remembered that the company is looking to phase out this desktop version of YNAB, which it's only supporting for the remainder of 2017, and is looking to migrate its customers to an online subscription service instead. I won't be doing that as I don't like the idea of having my personal data on their web-based system. So, having hit on a great product and established trust in it during the 34 day trial period, Steine LLC then betrays that trust by charging a higher-than-advertised fee. It smacks of a company intent on extracting everything it can from its customers. To me, that's very dishonest and very disappointing.

If you are in for the budgeting only and you are ready to follow their methodology it's fine. But if you need powerful finance app that can adjust to your needs, look elsewhere. I prefer MoneyWiz after trying pretty much everything on the market.
