CustomMenu 3 overview

CustomMenu lets you build your own global menu to quickly access your favorite apps, files, and folders. Within your custom menu, you can:

  • simply click to open an app, file, or folder;
  • Cmd-click to show the app, file, or folder in the Finder;
  • easily browse and access hierarchical folder contents;
  • view file info (kind, size, created, modified, preview);
  • select the app to open a file; and
  • easily switch between running apps.

CustomMenu is always at your fingertips:

  • via the global menu
  • via customizable keyboard shortcut
  • at the current mouse location
  • even in full-screen mode

CustomMenu 3 is the successor of the classic CustomMenu, and has been completely rewritten to be even better. The new features are:

  • The new preview feature allows you to look at the contents of a file
  • A new submenu now lists the apps, files, and folders you have recently used
  • The Application Switcher can now hide other apps automatically
  • New option for developers to show hidden files and package contents
  • A modernized user interface
  • Several other improvements, new options, and minor bug fixes

Can anybody clarify whether CustomMenu 3 resolves folder aliases? Would it allow me to seamlessly drill down through folder structures that may include aliases or symlinks anywhere in that folder hierarchy? I'm aware XMenu does this superbly, but it doesn't permit reordering files and folders non-alphabetically, nor does it have dividers as CM 3 does. CM 3 looks fully customisable, but I need to be sure I could disable unused features like Application switcher and Recent items (or at the very least, choose the number of recent items and restrict which locations CM monitors for recent items). In other words, is this the app I've been looking for?

This interesting application is rated 4.8 out of 32 comments on AppStor, and just $8. It indeed looks extremely helpful, unfortunately no trial. I understand $8 is pocket money. But last update was in May 2019...

Looking to purchase - wondering if anyone has set it up to open with a trackpad rather than a mouse? Below, users report that they have set trigger using mouse wheels etc to open, but that's not an option w trackpad and various one/two/three finger touches already assigned to other actions. Seems promising as potential replacement for FinderPop and FolderGlance for Big Sur+ any guidance welcomed, thanks

I gave this application at first just 3 stars. See original review below. However, I happily can change this to 4 stars. After using CustomMenu for some time I find it almost as good as FinderPop was. What made the difference for me is the possibility to have a short cut to show CustomMenu, and I could configure my Logitech mouse to "type" this short cut when I press the wheel button - this makes it now easier to access the menu items. It still would be great if it would be possible that the menu pops up at the mouse cursor when right-clicking anywhere in Finder. Original review: This app has little more functionality than a folder with aliases in the dock. However, it works as described, and that is better than nothing. It could become a 5-star application if the custom menu would pop up at the mouse cursor when right-clicking anywhere in Finder (like a context-sensitive menu item) and/or when clicking anywhere in the empty parts of the menu bar (like FinderPop did). It would be really great if the developer could make that happen!

Does it only work as Menu Bar item? FinderPop and FolderGlance both work as CM items in the Finder - eg clicking on file on desktop brings up options for how to work with file/what to do etc. All the screen grabs suggest/show only Menu Bar list ? Two options in Mac Store here in Australia - CustomMenu and CustomMenu 3. AUD$13 for CM 3. What's the difference?
