MediaKeys overview
MediaKeys enables you to control media playback without the need for specific media keys on your keyboard. I use a keyboard that lacks any multimedia media keys (volume up, volume down, mute, eject). Since OS X doesn’t allow you to remap existing keys as media keys I wrote MediaKeys to allow you to do just that.

This app has actually been updated to Universal version 1.1, with instructions on the developer's website about how to run as a hidden app. A neat solution for remapping the media keys when using the function keys in standard mode.
