Scannerz overview

Scannerz is a set of hard drive, SSD, and system analysis tools designed to help users isolate hardware and performance problems with their system. Scannerz itself can help identify problems with hard drives, SSDs, interconnecting support circuitry, and logic boards. Performance Probe 2 can help identify software problems, hard drive or SSD performance problems, network bottlenecks, and overactive or memory intensive applications. FSE or FSE-Lite allow the user to identify which applications are making excessive use of the hard drive or SSD, with FSE being configurable. The tool Phoenix, can allow a user to perform very basic drive cloning, create an emergency boot drive on an external drive or USB flash drive, and perform file recovery on a damaged drive.

A multi-drive/volume logical volume created in Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks or Mountain Lion using Core Storage can be tested in its entirety or by each individual drive component comprising the logical volume. Fully encrypted Core Storage based drives or volumes may be scanned directly without needing to use an external drive or another bootable media. Core Storage volumes can be evaluated using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, although Core Storage volumes will not be mountable since these OSes cannot inherently recognize Core Storage. There is also full support for Apple RAID, as well as most hardware RAID units. Scannerz can also handle drives not normally recognized by Macintosh computers as well as some drives too damaged to be properly detected by the operating, assuming the drive is at least still operational. This release will also support the latest versions of Sierra (macOS10.12). Limited support is provided for third party software RAID implementations.

Very good at what it does. Don't let the design distract you, it is a powerful software package.

Scannerz is primarily about system and media scanning. It's probably the best in the world at this, at least commercially, but don't mistake it with other tools like TechTool Pro or Drive Genius, because it is NOT a work alike or discount version, it's totally different. Whereas TechTool Pro and Drive Genius come with a fair number of different items related to the drive, like defraying, the entire Scannerz package seems to be dedicated to troubleshooting problems. Scannerz comes with Phoenix, Performance Probe, and FSE or FSE-Lite. Scannerz itself is probably what most people use and it can outscan TechTool Pro or Drive Genius, and detect problems those two miss completely. It can detect bad sectors, weak sectors, failing I/O cables, drive timeouts, memory problems, system bust problems, and failure symptoms SMART won't detect. I've seen Scannerz drive through a failing drive that TechTool Pro and Drive Genius couldn't even get operating. Phoenix is NOT a carbon copy cloner equivalent and it isn't supposed to be. Phoenix's job is to create an emergency boot volume called a Phoenix Boot Volume and it can recover, using a procedure similar to file cloning, good data from a bad drive. It can, as advertised, to very basic cloning, at which point what it's really doing is performing a recovery on a good volume. Performance Probe is a performance measuring tool. I use this all the time because it shows the memory in a pie chart format that can tell you how much an application is eating up. It comes with a loading feature that can help filter out the most active processes in the system. THis tool is good to find applications that are hogging up all the system resources. FSE and FSE-Lite are file system event monitors. I got the version with FSE and it's different from the Lite version because it's configurable. I've Scannerz, Phoenix, and Performance Probe frequently, but I rarely end up using this. It's easy to forget what it does and that I even own it. What it can do is identify, via a log file, all or targeted file system events in the system like the name of the file being operated on, the process, the user ID, etc. and it's all in Unix like format. It has it's uses tracking stuff like when IconServicesAgent or MDS are over active, but aside from that i rarely use it. The tech support for this package, at least for me, has been quite excellent.
