Magic Media Marker overview

Magic Media Marker's main purpose is to process video files and make them pretty in iTunes and on your Apple Devices. Feed Magic Media Marker a video file and it will automatically determine if the file is a TV Show or a Movie by it's file name and download the appropriate meta data and artwork for you. Magic Media Marker is designed to be a "set it and forget it" kind of App needing no user interaction.

Features
  • Automation Made Easy - Why spend so much time manually manipulating your video files? Even with other software that makes tagging your video "easy" you still have to go video by video approving changes. It's time consuming and monotonous. Magic Media Marker stays up in the menu bar out of your way, doesn't take up a lot of system resources, and best of all, after the initial set up (which is a breeze), it's completely automated. Whether you manually feed Magic Media Marker or have it watch a folder for new videos, your attention is not needed. TV Shows and Movies show up in iTunes like magic ready to watch on any of your iDevices.
  • Driven By Powerful Databases - Magic Media Marker gets it's meta data and artwork from powerful, established databases. For TV Shows Magic Media Marker pulls information from thetvdb.com, and uses themoviedb.org for Movies. With these two resources Magic Media Marker is able to quickly pull accurate results back for even more obscure titles.
  • Integrates with Growl - Magic Media Marker also takes advantage of Growl for notifications. Pair that with something like Prowl or Boxcar and you can have notifications sent to your phone when TV Shows are ready to watch.
  • Integrates with HandBrake - If your videos need transcoding, Magic Media Marker is also able to control HandBrakeCLI to make your videos ready for your iDevice(s) even if they start out in the wrong format.

What’s new in version 3.3

Version 3.3:
  • TV Show's now fall back to the title in their file name if the show is not found during a lookup
  • Shows that were not match are still added to the tv database so the user can set a Display Name for future video processing.
  • Added the ability to add a tv show to the local data base before processing to help improve search results for tv show with weird names
  • Fixes a bug where the menu icon wasn't turning red to indicate processing errors

I will refrain from rating, since I already sent a support email to the devs and I'm waiting to see how the feedback is going to be. On that email I only talked about what I consider to be the major problem, since all the other are irrelevant until that one is fixed, at least for me, but here I'll try to be a little more explicit. Right now I'm a little disappointed with the current version. I like the concept, a faceless app that, without any intervention of the user, picks the file on a certain folder, checks automatically for metadata, converts it using a predefined HandBrake setting and depending if it's a movie or a TV show sends that converted file to a specific folder (or directly to iTunes, but since I still need to add subtitles, I prefer to have them outside iTunes). The minor problems are: • Non recursive folder check, meaning that if I have a sub-folder with several files in it, it won't "see" them and doesn't start conversion • Although HandBrake allows the inclusion of subtitles in a simple and painless way, MMM doesn't support that. • Opening the processing queue while MMM is working results in a window that doesn't show the remaining files and that it's impossible to close again until the conversion process ends Medium problem: • When trying to directly use the HandBrake presets putting on the "custom" area something like this: --preset="AppleTV 2" the end result is usually worst (as in with macroblocks showing every once in a while) then the one using directly HandBrake GUI Major problem: • EVERY SINGLE TIME that MMM ends a conversion and need to move the final file to the proper folder it crashes. I don't know if it's related with the fact that the path to that folder has extended (latin) characters or what but it's a major pain in the... backside and makes MMM currently unusable to me.
