MDB ACCDB Viewer overview

MDB/ACCDB Viewer lets you open Microsoft Access databases on your Mac -- regardless of whether they are in the olderMDB or the newer ACCDB format. A convenient search function lets you find what you are looking for. Double-clicking rows brings up a record window, perfect for reading long text or inspecting images.

MDB Viewer plays nice with others: export your database as Excel files, as CSV files, convert it to SQLite, or create SQL dumps. Because all apps have their unique intricacies, the documentation includes detailed instructions for transferring your data to Filemaker, Bento, Excel, Numbers, Open Office, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and Address Book.

While MDB Viewer shows all the data stored in the database, it can not display forms or queries, and it can not modify databases.

What’s new in version 2.2.7

Version 2.2.7:
  • Fixed a crash when an error occurred during XLS or XLSX export
  • Fixed a memory error that could potentially cause a crash

I bought this the day it came out on the MAS, and I have to say I have not regretted it. Whilst I do also have the ODBC drivers from Actual (which are very good), this tool saves me needing to go via Excel - many of my clients send me data as MDB and ACCDB files for me to process in MySQL and the tool supports this with export options for various formats, including MySQL, SQLite and CSV. The developer is very responsive and has been quick to fix bugs and add features when I have raised them with him. I notice that the price has gone up quite a bit since I bought it though - still, given the amount of time it has saved me, I'd probably still buy it today. For more casual users I believe that there are alternatives now, so it would be worth investigating although I have no experience as to their stability etc. Note that this is not a database tool in its own right - you cannot run Access SQL queries against it and the other Access objects are not available (views, reports, forms, VB Macros etc). The purpose of this tool is to be able to open and view table data, and if needed export it into a format that is usable on the Mac.
