Chikoo overview

Chikoo is a file organizer for the Mac.

Main features:
  • Multiple libraries: Create as many libraries as you want and organize whatever files you want in each. For example, organize your articles in one library and movies in another.
  • Custom attributes: Chikoo does not limit you to a fixed set of hardcoded attributes. For example, organize your articles with respect to the author's father's name, or your movies with respect to the director's pet's date of birth. It's all up to you.
  • Type groups: Organize the file extensions of your files into groups of your choice. For example, put the file extensions "mov" and "mp4" into the "Movies" group, and "jpg" and "png" into the "Images" group. This feature can be useful when organizing multiple types of file within a single Chikoo library.
  • Lists, smart lists, and list folders: Chikoo libraries have a sidebar in which you can add regular lists, smart lists, and list folders -- much like playlists in iTunes.
  • Library folders: By default, Chikoo leaves files at their existing locations when importing them into a library. But you can also associate folders of your choice with a library, and have Chikoo automatically move or copy files into any of them upon import. With Chikoo, you have complete control over where your files are located on the filesystem.
  • Quick Look: Press the space bar to Quick Look your items, just like you do every day in the Finder.

That's not all. Watch our screencasts and download the trial to learn more!

What’s new in version 1.1

Version 1.1:
  • The "Quick Look" tab in the Preferences has been replaced with a new, more general "Folder Access" tab. It turns out that access to folders is useful not just for Quick Look, but also for other things (see the next item).
  • Chikoo is now more intelligent when attempting to locate files. For example, if Chikoo has access to the Dropbox folder on one Mac (--through the Folder Access Preferences; see the previous item--), the user will no longer be bothered about access to each file that is added to the library on another Mac.
  • Packages can now be imported. In other words, things like rtfd or OmniOutline documents, which are not really files but package folders, can now be imported.
  • Read-only and locked files can now be imported.
  • File sizes now always match the ones shown in the Finder. Reason: Chikoo now also includes the sizes of resource forks. (But such a mismatch should have been rare in practice since most user files don't have resource forks.)
  • The toolbar's contextual menu is now also available in the View menu. This has its benefits. For example, users can now hide/show the toolbar using a keyboard shortcut if they assign one via the Keyboard System Preferences.
  • When a library window's toolbar changes in height or is hidden/shown, the window's height now stays the same. This makes toggling the toolbar more natural (see the previous item).
  • The Command-F keyboard shortcut and the Edit -> Find menu item now bring focus to the search field (after showing the toolbar if it's hidden).
  • Fixes a bug that makes it impossible to Control-click on a library window's toolbar to bring up the contextual menu.

Really liking this light weight organizer. I'm using to sort sheet music by instrument, tuning, genre, year, etc. Hope it's doing enough business to stick around!

I've used Chikoo for several days and decided to purchase after my initial testing. What I like is that it's fast, bloat-free and works well with files/folders on external as well as internal drives. Check out the videos on their website - I literally understood how to use it in 5 minutes by watching the first few videos. I've used Devonthink and EagleFiler before and while they are more powerful for my purposes I found they are also quite resource intensive and complex to maintain over time. Do note that instead of indexing file content Chikoo looks at Name, Type, File Name, and Path, as well as any custom text attributes you may add yourself. To me this is an advantage as it works fast and doesn't change the location of my current files (I tested on my largest database of 700,000 project files and it pulled up a search in 3-5 seconds). By using Spotlight, Chikoo and Fresh for Mac I now have my dream system for pulling up any file I need quickly. Fresh handles all my recent files, Spotlight anything recent that Fresh doesn't and Chikoo helps me find everything else. The developer has been very responsive to my questions and suggestions so I suggest you at least check it out to see if it works for your workflow.

I am slowly using this app more and more. It does exactly what it says it does, and does it well. I use it to keep active files in front of me when I have time to deal with them, no matter where they're located in my file structure. Works well with Dropbox, too.

Found this program by accident. It is really a tremendous program for organizing lots of disparate websites and documents. Very easy to use. The ability to leave the originals in their original locations and being able just to reference the documents is a real asset as you do not have to reorder your entire file system.

Good little app for organizing and accessing files. The application is fast to launch (I have not yet finished to import all my files, but since this is only a link to the file, I presume it will be always fast to launch). Will certainly become better and better because the developer is very responsive.
