Tunesify overview

Tunesify is the simplest way to convert almost any audio file into formats supported by iTunes, iPods and iPhones. Tunesify can convert FLAC, Windows Media Audio, WavPack, Ogg Vorbis, Monkey's Audio and many more. Lossless formats, such as FLAC, can be converted to Apple Lossless, which preserves the true CD-quality sound. Files can also be converted to AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF or HE-AAC formats.

No knowledge of audio codecs or bitrates is necessary as an automatic mode takes all of the guesswork out of choosing your settings. Simply drag and drop audio files into Tunesify and click Convert. You can even convert music videos into audio files that will play on your Apple Device.

Tunesify uses the Core Audio and LAME encoders in order to ensure the highest quality audio conversions. Tunesify cannot convert files containing DRM (copy-protection).

A free trial version called 'Tunesify Lite' available at Mac App Store. Note that the $4.99 version has in-app purchases. Regarding Open Source software used by Tunesify and whether it is legally incorporated into the application, the developer's website currently states: "This software uses an FFmpeg binary that is compiled from unmodified source licensed under the LGPLv2.1. The FFmpeg source can be downloaded here.... The FFmpeg binary uses code of the LAME project that is compiled from unmodified source licensed under the LGPLv2.1. The LAME source can be downloaded here...."

Claims to use CoreAudio to convert but that is not true. It always uses a (illegal/not free) ffmpeg binary. Anyway - it works but the UI is so outdated I cannot imagine using this. Why do some devs just use a list box and some buttons and call it a app? This is not Windows but OS X! Please make it OS-X-a-like app. Not recommended.

The ffmpeg component of Tunesify uses over 99% CPU on a Core2Duo MacBook Pro (2007) with 4GB RAM when converting WMA to MP3. It's the same problem on my preferred alternative, EasyWMA. There is no option in Tunesify to set mp3 bit rate to 32kbps - I record speech only (not music) and 64kbps creates double the file size with no significantly better quality, hence my preference for 32.

$2 or $2000! Why should I pay for something that I can not use it after? No trial version, no sales at Macupdate.

It didn't bother me to buy it without trying it. It is only $2, after all, and I am quite prepared to lose it all if this app turn out to be a dud. As always, however, YMMV. If you really have to try it first, on the dev's website he links to the previous (and free) incarnation of the app, called FLAC2Mac.
