iRunTrains overview

iRunTrains is your 3D model railroad simulation application. You can think of iRunTrains as a virtual train set on your Mac, allowing you to control the speed and direction of multiple trains in real-time on a virtual train table. You can view your trains in a variety of fun ways and easily choose between the sixteen included layouts.

What’s new in version 0.7

Version 0.7:
  • Both diesel and steam engines that produce exhaust
  • Larger variety of rolling stock
  • Limited ability to modify train consist (but no coupling/uncoupling yet)
  • Sixteen bundled valley and island layouts
  • Simulated seaside and lake water
  • Finally some structures: Buildings, bridges, loading docks, etc.
  • Automatic train and turnout labels that appear and hide automatically
  • SLIF import of both RailModeler v4.0 and v4.1 designs
  • Internal optimizations to improve frame-rate performance

It looks awesome! If only it could let us make our own tracks, like googolChooChoo. A huge part of playing with toy trains is to make the layouts, not just runnig them.

It's a real treat watching the progress being made as this application is developed. Looking forward to more.

Terrific Graphics, a bit boxy and overall boring. Something about putting trains together and switching them is missing, but then I did get what I paid for. There may be a potential for this simulation to develop into a real challenge. Currently the only challenge is being able to read the instructions.

What a wonderful waste of time! Only the "right-click" preferences are unavailable on a MacBook with only trackpad and no mouse. CTRL-Click does not work. Maybe more trains in the future? And trains on the same track? More switches between tracks? Love it!

Sorry about that. It was a packaging glitch that I fixed within an hour of learning about it. The fix is to remove "-0.3" from the end of the iRunTrains executable name. That numeric file extension confuses Mac OS X so as to not automatically start Terminal, even though Finder knows that iRunTrains is a "Unix Executable File".
