ProxyCap overview

ProxyCap enables you to redirect your computer's network connections through proxy servers. You can tell ProxyCap which applications will connect to the Internet through a proxy and under what circumstances. This is done through a user-friendly interface, without the need to reconfigure any of your Internet clients. ProxyCap has native support for the SSH protocol, allowing you to specify a SSH server as the proxy server.

What’s new in version 2.28

Tried Proxifier, MacProxy and ProxyCap: Out of those, ProxyCap is the only one which can manage your SSH tunnel, even when using Public Key Authentication. My Score: + Robust feature set + Manages SSH Connection with Public Key + DNS Resolution can be chosen on a per rule basis - Interface lacks polish (e.g. Menubar Icon is ugly and sticks out against all others, Icons for rule action are just as well) Compared to competition: - Proxifier sports traffic monitoring and more flexible rule management - MacProxy has cleaner interface Finally I'd like to say, that during my tests all of the Applications tested were working without causing any trouble. They all offer a free trial, so try before you buy.

ProxyCap has the most robust feature set of any of the 3 forced proxy applications I've tried (Proxifier and MacProxy being the other two). Good: ProxyCap allows you to specify ssh servers as the proxy. It then manages the ssh tunnel connection. Doesn't always pick up when a tunnel is having problems and re-connect (such as over a lossy network connection) though. Good rules support and best remote DNS resolution behavior I've tried. Bad: Unfortunately the current version doesn't allow traffic to bypass their redirect filter entirely. This causes problems with certain applications. For example, I'm unable to get network access when using Parallels with ProxyCap. Ugly: Not written by full time Mac developers. There are a number of cosmetic issues. Several things are done in a non-Mac standard way, such as having to import SSH keys rather than using the keychain to store the SSH key file password. Licensing is very restrictive as a computer specific ID is required to register a computer.
