Arcade Typing Tutor overview

Arcade Typing Tutor is a program that makes typing fun! More engaging than the original missile defender arcade game on which it is based, Arcade Typing Tutor is the most entertaining way to learn how to type on the Mac!

What’s new in version 3.0.1

Version 3.0.1:
  • Fixed a freezing problem that would affect some users when a large number of asteroids was present on the screen.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the "Word List" button to be deactivated at times.
  • Performance has been improved and flying saucers won't fire until they've entered onto the screen a short distance.

I agree with the previous comments. I like this very much but it only improves speed. It is however quite addictive (unlike most education!) and if correct finger layout could in some way be incorporated with increased word complexity to test finger skills this would be a very useful programme. The voice audio is a little annoying and an option to turn it off would be nice. Move up a notch and create a serious product and you are onto a winner.

Arcade Typing Tutor 1.1.8 has a nice graphics implementation of an old idea that appeals to the arcade gamer, especially boys learning to type. It really isn't a tutor in that it only develops speed skills by increasing the rapidity of words with higher levels in the game. I've found also that the game freezes regularly in Tiger (10.4.2) much to the annoyance of those playing. The fixed scope of the vocabulary and thus the keys used is a major drawback to learning to type. Although the user can create a separate file with custom letter combinations and words (as noted in the readme file), this could be updated easily. For example, it shouldn't be hard to create a sequence of letters or words that would improve keyboard coverage beginning with the home row and moving up into numbers and special characters. It would be nice if the letters used became more complex at each level, or if there were a choice of which group one could practice with on the keyboard. This is one of very few arcade style games for the Mac that can appeal to beginning and experienced typists both, but it needs improvement.

This is really one of the best programs that i have come across to help improve your typing skills. Its generally fun and a typing program incorperated into an arcade game is genius. It can be a challenge for beginners up to pro typers.
