Virtual CD-RW overview

If your Mac doesn’t have a CD drive, how can you use an app that burns to CD?

  • You can’t use a disk image (.dmg) file instead because it won’t appear to be inserted in a real optical drive to your Mac.
  • You could use an external CD drive, even though they are much slower than an internal CD drive.t

How about a virtual CD app, the FAST and EASY way? Virtual CD-RW is an easy to use virtual CD driver that looks exactly like a CD drive to your Mac and to ALL apps running on your Mac. And because it stores the virtual CD data in a file on your hard drive, it’s much faster than any actual CD drive, whether it is an internal or an external CD drive. Best of all, No additional hardware is required!

Virtual CD-RW installs a CD icon on the macOS menu bar and you use the CD icon in the menu bar to interact with the Virtual CD-RW:

  • Burn to a virtual CD to bin/cue format
  • Insert and read from a virtual CD in bin/cue, iso, or car format
  • Erase a virtual CD

And its free to try. Simply download Virtual CD-RW and try it free for 15 days. During the trial period, Virtual CD-RW is fully functional with no restrictions on its use.

Value: 1.0

I can't really speak to the "value" as I tried this in two install instances to use with Apple Music, on macOS 12 Montery and then macOS 11 Big Sur, neither appears to be working.

Ease of use: 1.0

The instructions aren't well documented, I was able to guess the name of the white listed Kext by way of searching the name of the System Software service. Hint, it's Robert Wiebe. The PDF for instructions doesn't tell you which the to white list and if you're like myself, you have a back log of legacy software that you haven't white listed. The App itself is nebulous. Under macOS 12, creating a new disk simply hangs without any indication of what's happening.

I tried this on both macOS 12 and macOS 11. macOS 12 doesn't work at all whereas the CDRW does appear in the finder in macOS 11 but does not work with Apple Music, which is 99% of the appeal as it'd allow users to faux-burn lossless tracks and re-important them DRM free so they can be used with older devices (iPods) or other audio applications. This app seems to be broken with modern macOSes, as it relies on a kext hack, and whitelisting the said security service. Hint, the instructions do not tell you the name of the software service to be whitelisted: It's Robert Wiebe. I did verify at least the uninstaller does what it says, using Pacificist to check to see if it was truly uninstalled. Also subscription services suck, especially if the app isn't maintained.

Does not work *at all* on Monterey. It literally does nothing.

Never could get it to work properly because of license issues. Not worth the time.

Crazy expensive for what it does. The price on the official site is now $25, so down from the original $30 quoted here on MU, right? No! Sneakily, they turned it into a subscription and if you read the purchase terms carefully it now says "$24.95 USD for each year". Why does a simple kernel extension like this need recurring payments?? Thanks, but no, thanks.
