Newton-II for Mac

Program for solving mechanical equations for movements.

Version 3.5

Newton-II overview

Newton-II is a program for solving mechanical equations of motions numerically. The equations can be parameterized for interactive investigations of the motions. The according solutions are displayed immediately in a diagram.

The differential equations (DEQs) are programmed to calculate the time dependence of the velocitiy v(t) of a point of mass from the given acceleration a. Then the location s(t) is calculated from v(t).

The acceleration a can be entered directly or with any desired mathematical term (i.e. a = F/m from Newton's law). For solving the DEQs several solution methods up to a very sturdy adaptive Runge-Kutta-Method of 4th order can be used. The output of the results are given graphically in a diagram and as a table for further usage.

Special qualities of Newton-II

  • Realtime calculation while modifying a parameter (perfect to investigate the connections between the parameter and the movement).
  • Compare the calculations with experimental data or predictive functions.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using conditioned variables or table functions.
  • Extensive printing and export capabilities.
  • Self evident program design and very intuitive program handling (i.e. great mouse support in the diagram, input assistances ... ). ? minimal lerning curve
  • Direct accessible examples with explanations.
  • Eminently suitable for lectures, talks and private studies

What’s new in version 3.5

Version 3.5:
  • It is now possible to display several sizes in one diagram. (To do this, enter the sizes separately in the axis plot field with;)
  • You can now display the values of all variables defined in the model in a table that you can define yourself.
  • The support for scaling the user interface has been improved. It now includes the tables and, if desired, the diagram display.
  • You can now use a template file for new documents and also apply this to old documents (three templates are supplied).
  • The model settings have been revised and various options for setting diagram parameters across the board have been added.
  • The program settings have been expanded (GUI scaling, tooltip setting, template selection)
  • The presentation of comparison functions and comparison values has been improved.
  • High resolution monitors (HiDPI or Retina) are now fully supported. -> high resolution of the icons and diagrams.
  • The tracking of changes to the model has been improved.
  • 3D diagrams have been optimized (including context menus, animation & printing)
  • Legends are now displayed in all coordinate systems and also printed.
  • The resolution when printing has been improved.
  • The start selection window has more options (documents and examples used can be selected)
  • The calculations are now running in the background -> feedback on calculation / cancellation possible
  • Document information has been reorganized ... from now on PDF files with the same file name (print info texts in a PDF file)
  • The sidebar with the modeling can be enlarged (use of projector)
  • The coordinate system settings have been revised (palette in the sidebar removed)
  • The settings window has been significantly expanded and replaces the palette
  • There is now an animated & pausable slow motion display of the calculation results
  • There is now the option to only partially plot the graph
  • There is now an automatic axis mapping for a new project
  • Speed optimization when plotting long calculations
  • The change quantities (derivatives) can now be used like normal quantities
  • The print version has been revised and is now clearer
  • New control buttons and other minor GUI improvements
  • Natural constants revised and supplemented (new values according to CODATA 2018)
  • Revision of the examples including description (thanks to Maximilian Hofer)
  • Revision of the English translation (thanks to Daniel Nieto)
  • Various bug fixes

Runge-kutta is a good general purpose integrator, however Newtonian dynamics have special properties. It would be nice to have the option of a simplectic [canonical] integrator which would preserve the underlying canonical structure of the solution space.

You've got to be kidding. $20 for something that you can solve exactly on paper in minutes? Anybody who could possibly what to solve some equations of motion knows how to do it by hand, or at least how to write their own simple little program to integrate it for them, so what is the need for this? If it was free I would still question the value of it.
