Set Icon overview

Set Icon is a small application that lets you quickly and easily set a custom icon for one your drives either from an ICNS file or any old image file that Mac OS supports.

All images are scaled to fit within the constraints of a 512×512 icon.

Set Icon applies custom icons in such a way that they appear correctly both in (Snow) Leopard's side bar and in the Boot Camp chooser.

What’s new in version 0.5

Version 0.5:
  • Snow Leopard compatibility.
  • Removed tooltips, un-needed excess.
  • Finder is no longer forcibly killed.
  • Images are now scaled rather than stretched.
  • Improved icon application.

A great little app for changing the ".VolumeIcon.icns" file of a drive. Simple and effective.

Version 0.4 of Set Icon is currently non-functional with Snow Leopard. I am working on a fix and it should hopefully be published in the next week or so. Thanks for your patience.

How about making it set custom icons for Leopard Folders, such that they don't prevent the folder icon from being double-clicked to open it? Apple seems to be in no hurry to fix either that or the disappearing 512x512 pixel mask bug.

What? The "correct" way??? Am I to understand that a simple copy & paste of an icon via the Get Info window is somehow incorrect? Is there some documented Leopard bug where custom hard drive icons will fail to display in the sidebar and/or BootCamp? Mine work fine.

Use this app to replace your HD icons with custom ones. It works well, is fast, and FREE. And to top it off, the author has also made some free gorgeous HD icons you can use with this. In fact, he made the app so that users of his icons would have an idiot proof way to install them.
