Screenflick overview

Screenflick features high-performance screen capturing for smooth, fluid motion up to 60 fps. Screenflick can record any portion of the screen, simultaneously recording audio from internal or external microphones and the system audio.

An excellent utility for software screencasters and software trainers, Screenflick offers the ability to display keyboard commands, and highlights mouse clicks to better communicate which actions are being performed during screen recording.

Unlike other solutions, Screenflick allows you to record a movie once and compress it as many times as you want at different resolutions, qualities, and with or without audio, offering you the maximum amount of flexibility when choosing which presentation options to offer to movie viewers.

What’s new in version 3.1.12

  • Fixes an issue where screen markup would not show up in the recording when using the "Record windows from: Only…" setting.
  • Fixes a rare crash when unplugging a device from the computer.
  • Fixes an interface issue when clicking the button to update Screenflick Loopback from an old version, which would lead to a crash.
  • On macOS 13 and later, Screenflick will use the system permission for "Input Monitoring" instead of "Accessibility" when wanting to capture key presses for displaying in the recording.

What's great about Screenflick is that it doesn't try to have too many features but what is there works properly. The core features are there. Easy system audio recording, exact area of the screen, good export options. The Quick Test function is brilliant and saves hours and nerves getting export settings right. The built-in screen capture is excellent but there's no export settings (have to convert it) and more importantly no way to record system audio without setting up Audio HiJack and putting the sound and picture together in post. While I own AudioHijack and Davinci Resolve/FCPX, opening a video editor to put sound and picture together on every screen capture is just a waste of time. iShowU Instant (I used to own a couple of Shiny White iShowU apps and would enjoy a discount) threw several bugs and crashed. I worry about having their audio loopback extension installed. With Screenflick I'm relatively confident that all will work as it should. The setup wizard is very good. And Screenflick is not overkill like Screenflow (for which I have a v9 license) which makes a huge drama out of recording a whole screen, saving a project just to export a section of the screen. Screenflick is goldilocks software. Just right for making video screen captures with audio. PS. If you are a film reviewer, Screenflick is heaven-sent. It allows you to easily capture bits and pieces of films with audio on Firefox from Netflix and the other big services.

App -8/10 Value - 5/10 Customer Support when you need them - 0/5 After purchasing both Screenflick 2 and 3, when there is an issue. Contacted them via web, email and Twitter, no one got back. Maybe once after i left a not so good review (almost immediately they replied) but no follo up whatsoever. Issue still not solved. Time to look for alternative screen capture app.

I like this product - easy to use, powerful, very clean and simple interface. I have been using it for a while now and recently upgraded to Mojave, and I notice that it crashes sometimes at the beginning of a recording. Otherwise a very good and reliable piece of software and highly recommended.

Not a review but an important comment. The upcomming new macOS 10.14 Mojave version has screenrecording build in as default. Just press Shift+Cmd+5 It captures in 60fps, has editing features and other nice things. It does not have video-in-video possibilities, but many people do not need this. This is one of the great new feature of macOS10.14 which I really like. This makes a lot of screen recording tools obsolete.

I've used this app many times to create training videos for my team's software, to capture a video that doesn't have an easy save feature, and so much more. Here's a useful tip: it's possible to redact portions of the video by doing the following: make a mostly transparent PNG the same dimensions as your video, but with black shapes where the video has content you don't want in the final video. Then, before exporting, choose that PNG file as the "Emblem" (see the Movie Info tab of the Export interface), and make its Position: Center. The way I did this was to take a screenshot of the first video I exported, then open that screenshot in Preview.app, then use Preview's annotation features to add a couple black rectangles, then clicked in the screenshot's background, Select All, and delete. The only thing still there were the black rectangles. I saved the screenshot (it was a PNG), and then used that as the Emblem, did a fresh Export, and voila! A redacted screen-recording video.
