Obviously, I develop websites, or I wouldn't need this. (version 7) I do have to say that it's much more convenient to use than XAMPP or MAMP. It encapsulates the environment, so I'm no longer using parts of my own OS during testing. This clears up a number of things I've run into over the years with other "local hosts" and makes the software worth paying for. And, the author is diligent and conscientious. 5 stars.

I have only downloaded the trial but I was weary of the reviews stating that there are security holes in this! I want to be able to host my website from my desktop is this an alternative to having a virtual host from a hosting service? Or is this more like a testing server like MAMP or XAMPP?

I use VirtualHostX almost every day and find it well worth the money. As a web developer frequently managing staging and production environments, this allows me to to set things up quickly and skipping over the repetitive tasks. I also appreciate the convenient "share over network" feature, which I use for pulling up tests on my iPhone, virtual machines, or anything else. A little on the expensive side, sure, but VirtualHostX gets a lot of use in my development workflow.
