iKana overview

iKana is a Japanese learning aide which helps to teach you the two Japanese phonetic alphabets Hiragana and Katakana. iKana can also be extended to teach other alphabets and Kanji.

iKana has three main learning components - flash cards, speed recognition, and vocabulary training test.

  • Flash cards are the starting point for beginners new to kana. Use the flash card viewer to help you memorize the different kana. The flash card viewer can be controlled with an Apple Remote.
  • The speed recognition test helps to reinforce your memory and improve your reading speed with an 'against the clock' multiple-choice test. The speed recognition test can also be controlled with an Apple Remote.
  • The word Romanization test helps you practice reading whole words by translating them from kana into Romaji. This test helps you learn some Japanese vocabulary as well as improving your translation and reading skills.

a great way to learn the basics of Japanese missing a bit a progress table this is only available in the vocabulary section, but for beginners like me it would be fun to have it for the letters as well. A very handy tool to get what you need!

A really nice app visually and is well worth the price. Trying to learn Japanese is difficult for me so this really helped me out and you can't argue with the value it offers. Could use a few small changes here and there just to make it even better than it already is (printing flash cards perhaps, scaleable window), IMHO, which I suggested to the developer as politely as I could - Totally unresponsive (not even a quick or automated reply) which kind of sucks, but there you go. Not an unusual situation with a lot of developers these days....

very nice application, easy to use and definitely useful for those who wants to start study hiragana and katakana (like me). Flashcards with editable hints are perfect. It would be perfect if it had a writing recognition system asking for the romanji and checking the ideogram (forgive my english), there is a video on youtube abaout an hombrew for nintendo DS, try searching "prog ds hiragana katakana".
