EagleFiler overview

EagleFiler makes managing your information easy. It lets you archive and search mail, Web pages, PDF files, word processing documents, images, and more. Use it to collect information from a variety of sources. Browse different types of files using a standard three-pane interface. Organize them into folders and annotate them with tags and notes, or leave everything in one folder and pin-point the information you need using the live search. Since EagleFiler stores its library in Finder format, you can use it in concert with the other tools in your Mac ecosystem.

EagleFiler in a nutshell:
  • With a single keypress, import Web pages, mail messages, or any file on your Mac
  • EagleFiler stores them in an open format: regular files and folders that are fully accessible to your other applications
  • Optionally: encrypt the files, add tags, notes, color-coded labels, and other metadata
  • Browse by folder or by tag, or use the live search to find the information you need (faster than Spotlight)
  • View, edit, or create documents directly in EagleFiler's streamlined interface, or double-click to edit using another application

EagleFiler is a digital filing cabinet, a research assistant, and a snippet collector. You can use it to write a journal, track all the files for a project or job, save your favorite Web articles, store financial statements, run a paperless office, plan a trip, collect your course notes, archive your e-mail correspondence, search mailing list archives, research a purchase, remember recipes to cook or books to read, store scientific papers, gather legal case notes, or assemble a scrapbook. It's the most flexible tool on your Mac.

What’s new in version 1.9.15

  • Improved EagleFiler’s support for importing from X/Twitter. When you press the capture key, tweets are now imported as HTML files rather than as plain text files.
    • This works in Safari, Google Chrome, Brave Browser, and Microsoft Edge. Previously, only Safari was supported.
    • This requires enabling JavaScript access in Web browsers.
    • Extraneous text is removed, and the filename and title are also improved.
  • When capturing a Web page in Safari, EagleFiler has long been able to preserve the selected text in the record’s note. This can be useful for recording that a certain part of the page is important but also storing the full context in which it appears. This now works with Google Chrome, Brave Browser, and Microsoft Edge, too.
  • When viewing a PDF file in Two Pages mode, the first page is now displayed as the cover, with pages 2 and 3 being the first ones displayed as a pair.
  • Updated the following sections of the manual:
  • Made some improvements to EagleFiler’s detection of the current library when using the capture key.
  • If macOS incorrectly reports that EagleFiler is damaged when installing or updating the app, we now have a Download Fixer tool to help.
  • Fixed a problem where the name of the current Safari profile could be included in the filename when capturing from Safari. For best results, be sure to follow the Enabling JavaScript Access in Web Browsers instructions.
  • Fixed a bug where indexing could be delayed if another library was busy verifying.
  • Fixed importing of FastMail message files on macOS 15.
  • Fixed a bug where the Activity window could look like it was indexing when indexing was disabled.
  • Fixed a bug where capturing from Twitter didn’t work from the x.com domain.
  • Added RevealRecordInParent to the esoteric preferences, which lets you control whether opening a record link shows the record in its containing folder rather than in the Records source.
  • Improved the layout of 4th-level section headers in the PDF version of the manual.
  • Updated to version 1.6.1 of the SkimNotes framework.

To Michael Tsai (the developer): any chance upgrading for Silicon Mac, without need for "helpers" ?

I am so impressed with the app and it's capabilities but mostly I am impressed with how responsive the developer is! My goodness, it seems to me he never rests-he is always willing to tweak the software to accommodate everyone's wants/needs in using his app. When you post to the EF Forum and say that there is something that isn't working right or you wish it could do this or that, Michael is always on top of things and will work with you to get it right. As far as I am concerned, Michael gets a Gold Star!

Indispensable! I store everything here: tax documents, check images for bookkeeping, invoices, thousands of web links, notes. Before EagleFiler, i had bought and tried Journler, Yojimbo, and Devonthink Pro Office, in that order, each for over a year. Each fell short. I've used EF since 2009.. I've asked many questions and reported a bug or two over the years. The dev, Michael Tsai, replies quickly and always with helpful answers or explanations. His updates are always substantive. Highly recommended!

i am so glad i found this app! had a mac since 1992. first time to have a laptop. have a TON of pop email to archive but be searchable. running into all sorts of issue since i'm not using migration assistant. want to start fresh. enter eaglefiler. tried a few apps before i found this beauty. wasn't what i was wanting, then bam! easily + quickly i had about 62,000+ emails organized by mailbox and searchable. saw that i could also use it for websites and did a few to check it out. will be like having a searchable brain. just what i need! happy camper.

I recently reported a bug to the EagleFiler developer and he immediately wrote back and promised a fix. Sure enough just a few days later he sent me a beta that fixed the issue. I tested EagleFiler, Yojimbo, and one of the Devon products - all 3 had the features I needed (storing away receipts and other pdf's, tagging, smart folders and the ability to add a quick note), but EagleFiler won me over with customer service. It's been around forever and the developer is still dedicated to constantly improving it.
