PlaneShift overview

The objective of PlaneShift is to create a virtual fantasy world in which a player can start as a peasant in search of fame and become a hero. We will focus our efforts in the reproduction of a real-world with politics, economy and many non-player-characters controlled by the server that will bring to life our world even without players connected!

We want to give Free access to everyone, without the need to either purchase the game or pay a monthly fee. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors.

Our virtual world is persistent, and this means you can connect to it at every hour of day or night and you will always find players and NPCs wandering our realms. You will be able to disconnect and reconnect again, the server saves the actual status of your character including his possessions.

You will use a client program to interact with our world, that enables you to have a 3D view of the surroundings.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

What’s new in version 0.6.3

Version 0.6.3:

Note: we have changed the way we build the Mac client, so please give us feedback if you experience any issues.

  • Improved NPC dialogue. When speaking with NPCs, you now have the option to click the bubbles to define the reading speed.
  • Three new client skins with new art for buttons, menus, etc... : Flames, Legend, Classic.
  • Possibility to give a name to a sack in your inventory. This will greatly simplify the organization of your items!
  • Crafting Shields. Shield Making crafting has been redesigned, condensed to 4 books for less confusion, all the shields parts are now craftable. Two new special shields, made of blue-steel metal, are now available!
  • Crafting Bows: A good news for the archers and crafters, Bow Making is now available!
  • Crafting Axes and Swords: Axes and knives handles are now craftable.
  • Magic: 4 new spells are available for Crystal and Blue Way!
  • The Howling Well rework: a mystery lurks in the well shadows!
  • Two new bosses have been designed and deployed in the game! Challenging to fight and win.
  • Access The Bronze Doors with a pterosaur, through a quest.
  • For spell research, a better system message tells you if the failure is because of a non-existing spell.

Value: 5.0

PlaneShift is in constant development, and that is not going to change - new content will continuously be added. Right now the game is being moved to Unreal Engine - less problems, more possibilities, nicer looks! Of course there will be a Mac version for Unreal Engine! And the game will stay Fully Free to Play - no hidden costs whatsoever!

Ease of use: 4.0

Some parts of the interface still need improvement, mainly when it comes to Crafting. For the rest of the interface you will need some minutes to get used to, and then it will be no real problem.

Features: 5.0

Lots of content, not only standard stuff (NPCs, monsters, quests, locations,...) but a huge amount of lore. There are four in-game libraries, but can you find them all?

Customer support: 4.0

In-game chat, messaging system, and help channel, forums, Discord channel. Helpful players. But since the game is created and run by volunteers, answers may take a day or two.

Can't really review it as it either won't connect to server or crashes whenever I hit the join button

This is about version 0.4. I am still using that thing on a 1 GHz-iMac G4. And I can say, though the game still lags often, it has gotten a whole lot better. Playability in the wilderness for example is great, as in most other areas. And the game itself: It has evolved and everyone interested in finding kind people with an interested to roleplay should give this one a try. Though the world is not that big, there are numerous quests to solve that might keep you busy for some time. And there are a lot nice, strange, friendly, weird... whatever players around that will be happy to roleplay with you. For newbies: Seek out the ps-forum on their website or their wiki. Most questions are answered there, so the start in this world should not be as steem as it was once.

I've tried out several iterations of this game on a 1-GHz iMac with a 64MB-GForce 4 MX and 1.25 GB of RAM. And while some elements where added to the gameplay and I liked the graphics and character-creation and the missions), the game itself didn't get faster, no, the latest version seems to be slower than ever before, even when using the simpler city-map without grass. The range of playability on the above mentionend configuration starts at "not much fun" to "completely unplayable" in the main town of the gaming-world, where I could count the seconds between each step of my character. It even did something I've never seen before with any other app: it slowed down the animation of Apples's spinning beachball. The idea might be nice to have a free alternative in this game-genre, but I think everyone with enough money to buy a fast-enough Mac won't worry too much about paying for commercial (and better) alternatives. And those that can't afford one won't have much fun with this game.
