Quake 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. QUAKE 4 begins only moments after the events of QUAKE II, with the Earth's fleet launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. Version 1.4.2:
- This is an official update for Quake 4. It will fully update any previous version of Quake 4 to version 1.4.2. It is recommended for all users.
- This update affects pure server and protocol consistency, and adds a number of other multiplayer fixes including support for QUAKE 4 TV. The read me has a complete listing of bug fixes as well as directions on how to operate QUAKE 4 TV. This update will be necessary for Mac users attempting to play multiplayer against PC users with the PC 1.4.2 patch.

wow big update! What are the other benefits to updating?? Are there any for single player mode? Speed improvements?? I need to know before i download :}

The game runs well on my machine and I like the multiplayer, it just sucks that there is such a delay on point releases. Really looking forward to 1.3 and it would also be nice to know that Aspyr is actually working on it as I assume they are... My machine falls within specs that Aspyr recommend so its no real surprise it works well

Don't even bother if you have a MacBook or a Mini. Demo ignores the widescreen option (though it is set) and doesn't allow you to choose widescreen modes like the native 1280 x 800. It is barely playable at 640 x 480 with all of the graphics options set to OFF. (And with all of the graphics at their lowest settings the models look terrible with hard edges down the vertical center of their heads and bodies.) Having the game auto detect the best settings for me it turned everything ON. Yeah right...
It looks amazing for about three seconds when it starts into the intro to the game with everything turned on. I wasn't expecting amazing performance out of the game, but it should be smooth to play with everything turned off at the lowest resolution. The UI however is VERY responsive and smooth.
I am not going to even bother messing with a CFG file to get it to run any better. I know the integrated Intel graphics aren't stellar, but I see no reason for the performance to be so bad with a gig of ram and SMP support and all the pretty stuff turned off. Graphics slowness wasn't the only issue, loading during cutscenes had significant lag where the screen would simply get stuck on a frame while audio continued. Walking around in the first level it seemed like it was having to cache and load constantly causing long pauses. (more than a second or two is long while in the middle of playing.)
I think I will download the demo for Windows and go check it out under bootcamp to compare the two.
