Hi guys, take a look at Wikipedia... it's not a WordPress like "easy to install" blogging or CMS software. This is a great, well-featured, secure and extensive solution to build a rich Knowledge Base with support of many media types. Is there any software on market, that does the same job as good as MediaWiki for free (free as in free beer :)? No, i think! Its not a sofware for everyone, but the best for a huge collection of knowlegde articles. My ratings (out of 10 Points): Installing 04 Points Using 09 Points Maintainance 06 Points Apperience 07 Points Costs 11 Points :)

it's good stuff - if a bit overengineered for most peoples' needs - and of course it's free, but is glaringly let down by the software's insistence you use 'CamelCase' for all pages you create. a problem which exists with Wikipedia itself. in other words don't expect to be able to create articles about 'iPods' or 'iPhones', MediaWiki will insist you use 'Ipod' or 'Iphone' - it may be a minor niggle, but becomes more significant if you're intending to use MediaWiki for some kind of mac-related wiki site.

Oh come on! No one else is reviewing?? It's free! It's amazing! It's fast, stable, incredibly useful, and easy to learn!! If I could add just 2 features, they would be (1) more of a WYSIWYG editor, and (2) the ability to assign moderators to pages so that edits are held until approved. (1) would make this tool much easy to use for non-techies -- I've run into this several times... trying to use a wiki for collaborative document development but having to give up because non-techies were too intimidated or found it too difficult. (2) Would make it a much more useful tool for collaborative document development and in smaller communities where there is are not enough people in the pool to monitor collectively for mistakes, whackos, etc. But this is still an awesome tool!
