FreeMind overview

FreeMind for Mac is an easy-to-operate mind-mapping software with a strong emphasis on folding. Based on Java, it is compatible with different environments, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is a particularly helpful productivity tool for planning projects, revising for exams, or sparking new ideas.

Features:

  • Branches shift automatically to ensure your nodes are presented in a concise and logical manner. Alternatively, you can move them manually.
  • Download FreeMind for Mac to protect your map or individual branches from the data loss with an automatic backup function provided by DES encryption.
  • You don't need to choose between fast link following and fast fold/unfold. Smooth navigation includes one-click folding/unfolding and following links with a click at the same time.
  • Use and edit long multiline nodes, even with newlines.
  • Decorate nodes with built-in icons, tones, and beautiful fonts.

What’s new in version 1.1.0_Beta_2

Version 1.1.0_Beta_2:

Big New Features:
  • HiDPI support (for Windows and Linux).
  • Look into the properties under Appearance -> Scale.
  • Provided a new way to generate graphical and local links: copy and paste nodes as graphical or local links.
  • The paste of structured (HTML) data recognizes the structure and reconstructs it as hierarchical nodes.
  • Format dialog has example nodes that show all the changes.
Smaller Features:
  • Font color combo box
  • Re-developed lots of the attribute functionality
  • Search dialog on geographical maps accepts coordinates in the form "lat lon" or "lat lon;lat2 lon2;..."
  • A reverse lookup is then performed unless you set do_reverse_lookup_on_lat_lon_search to false
  • New search-and-replace dialog shows tooltips of the node and note text
  • Enhanced the calendar widget to show 12 month at once
  • Standalone map server created
  • Icon toolbar can have multiple columns (see properties->appearance)
  • On save, thumbnails are created and displayed as tooltip on mindmap links to other mm-files
  • Added node statistics to the status bar (inclusive sums of node contents)
  • New Export as HTML page with a single clickable image containing only the links (URLs) or the map
  • Clones can be deactivated by menu
  • Strikethrough
  • Sorting in both directions by repeating the command
  • Markings in calendars

What a great little app! The documentation says to use the Insert key to insert a "child" node; on a Mac this was baffling, but a quick Google search gave the answer – use the Tab key. Some of the other keystrokes & functionality are not intuitive e.g. to insert line breaks, but it's all learnable. It does work, it's pretty quick to get started, and it's free!

Brilliant app. No frills, no fuss. Easy to use and easy to learn. Can only imagine how awesome it would be if I really had learnt how to use it and not just messed around. Don't expect flying saucers and amazing Flash or Java capabilities - this is an application for people who want to work and get the work done, not bother around with fancy things that take up time. Give it a few years and it probably will have some flying saucers - not necessary in my opinion, but inevitable as a part of evolution. Congrats to the developers for creating this awesome app!

When I open it, the app shows and empty doc and many tools, but all tools stay grey (unusable), so I have to search through the menu items to do something, but futile. The only usable item is "Help > Documentation" which closes (!) my empty doc and opens a mindmap explaining commands that simply do not work. One of the hardest-to-use and most user-unfriendly apps I've ever met. Should be called "UnfreeMind" instead! While so much great, self-explaining GUIs exist since the nineties, this 2012 app sux cog.
