Strata Design 3D CX overview

Strata Design 3D CX 8 is our professional-level 3D modeling and animation software that delivers end-to-end power for the entire 3D design workflow. Quickly bring your creative ideas to life with a simplified learning curve, tight integration with Adobe Photoshop, and award-winning rendering quality rivaling any software at any price.

  • All the Power for One Simple Price - Unlike some 3D applications, Strata Design 3D CX gives you all of its 3D tools for one great price. We don't force you to decide how you're going to use the product in the future or make a guess ahead of time about which tools you might need for future projects. The only pricing decision you need to make is whether to buy Design 3D CX by itself, or as part of the Strata 3D Design Toolkit.
  • Model Anything in 3D or Import Existing 3D Assets - For many, the thought of 3D modeling is a daunting task. Design 3D offers an extremely friendly modeling toolset and environment for manipulating your polygons, splines, and primitives into any 3D object or scene you can imagine. If you're working with existing 3D assets, Strata Design 3D CX utilizes a host of filters and options to accurately import third-party 3D models and scenes.
  • Apply Surface Textures with Precision - In the world of 3D, texturing may just be the most important component in creating convincing final renderings. Once you have designed your 3D model, Strata Design 3D CX gives you powerful tools to create, apply and manipulate surface textures with beautifully accurate results.
  • Set-Up Your Scene with Lighting, Backgrounds, Cameras - Scene composition is a critical step in producing stunning images. Design 3D CX makes it easier to control the environment than any photography studio you could imagine. Position your 3D objects and then place lights, reflection panels, cameras, backgrounds, environments, reflection elements and more to produce a superior final render or animation for your design project.
  • Render Photo-Real Images and Animations at Blazing Speeds - Design 3D is well known for its extraordinary rendering technology. Whether you're after photo-realistic results or some other style for your static or motion graphics, you will find the rendering options to suit your needs and output the results using one of the fastest rendering engines in the industry. After all, it's all about the final results and Design 3D delivers.
  • Tightly Integrated with Adobe Photoshop - Design 3D CX is a favorite among creative designers, thanks to tight integration with Adobe Photoshop. Design 3D allows you to use linked PS files as image maps, so changes made in the PS file are automatically updated in the Design 3D texture. Design 3D renders to Adobe Photoshop Layers for easy post-production work. Image maps created in Photoshop and saved (as TIFF, JPEG, PSD, etc.) can be loaded into the texture channels as image maps for creating textures.

Hmmm... Just bought this less than 3 weeks ago and now I have to pay to update it! What a waste of money. I really do not support greed. No indication that if someone is a recent purchaser that the "upgrade" is at no cost. I will delete this POS from my system. The application works OK - not the best - but what really bothers me is the developers "business model".

Hi, I had Strata Design 3D CX 6 on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, 10.8.1) and I bought the Strata bundle this week (Design 3D CX 7 and Foto). Great software, I really like it. However, I have a problem with the registration of Design 3D CX 7. Every time I start the app, I have to enter my serial. The serial is accepted and I'm able to use the tool. The problem: The serial info is not stored, so I have to re-enter it every time I open the app. :-( Is there a solution for this problem? Kind regards, Claus

A solid if not spectacular 3D package with a strong community behind it. Has been around on the Mac platform for two decades, so they are very strong in the Mac community. Has been a Windows application for the past decade, so it's a true cross-platform solution for shops needing that kind of flexibility. Version 6 saw the inclusion of polygon modeling with a recent 6.2 update that added to this new set of tools making it a fairly strong modeler. Still not in the category of much more expensive 3D applications, but a very capable mid-level 3D application. Rendering has always been a strong suite for Strata3D. It's had a radiosity rendered for over a decade and has added extensive HDRI tools in the latest major revision. Can even save rendering files for later rendering, offering the ability to have multiple computers render different parts of an animation frameset at the same time. You are not able to use multiple computers to help render a single frame though, something that has been requested by the community. Animation tools are fairly robust, but can be confusing. There's a lot of power under the hood here, but much of it is hidden or hard to find. Could definitely use an interface overhaul here, but it's not so complex that you can't use it now, it's just that it could be better. With it's strong rendering engine, it can render some amazing animation clips, but be prepared for long render times. Although Strata has made major jumps in render speed, high end renders can still take a long time just like any other 3D software. Having more than one computer to render sections of an animation can save valuable amounts of time here. Strata used to offer a distributed render option but it's no longer available, although the community has requested it be added back in. The latest version also includes tools to integrate into Adobe's Photoshop program allowing a lot of control over textures, placing 3D objects in Photoshop files and swapping images from Photoshop into Strata as a 3D object. Currently no other software package offers this ability. Strata's community is fairly strong and very dedicated. Strata themselves participate in the community site run by someone independent of Strata, so they hold no influence over the website themselves, something refreshing in the industry. Strata seems genuinely concerned with making their users happy. They also seem very dedicated to producing fairly bug-free software. While no software version can be completely bug-free, Strata does seem to take extreme care to not release software before it's ready, another welcome trait. While Strata3D CX isn't perfect, it's a strong package with an amazing rendering engine that can produce top flight work. With ties to Adobe Photoshop, it has a strong tie-in with commercial 2D work. Strata has made a package that many 2D graphic artists can gravitate to without the large learning curve many 3D software packages seen to have. It also has a strong following in the architectual arena as well. Something to consider when looking at other solutions. Lastly, Strata has some additional software packages that augment Strata3D CX that also bear some investigation. It gives Strata some flexibility in other areas besides just a model / renderer. If you are looking for one software package to do everything and not have to learn multiple software packages, Strata will fit in just fine.
