Blender 3D has ended the era of these products. You can't beat Blender. You can't. Pixar is slowly porting to it. I've done stereo 3D images that the best CTOs of FX shops in LA couldn't believe when presented. Maya is going to be last survivor, but will die eventually.

I've had my eye on modo for some time, however, their pricing policy is far too agressive, so far as I am concerned. For the first 5 years, modo was stable price-wise, having increased from version 102 to 501 by only $100. In the last 4 years, though, it has gone from $995 to 1676 (yes, 68%), which in our current economy is suicidal.
I've had a similar experience with Cinema 4D a few years ago, and their pricing policy forced me out of their game, though I love their product. Maxon, however, has been smart enough to introduce new trimmed-down versions at lower prices.
Since, I expect modo 901 to sell above $2000 only one year from now, I must look elsewhere for similar, or near-similar software.

The best out there. Smooth and intuitive. Fast, beautiful renders.
The one line description under the title here hardly scratches the surface.
This is awesome software. The user base is positive and supportive.

Current version of modo is 501. Its the best 3D software I've met. It only lacks character animation (I wish it would merge with messiah). Oh, and its 64bit also :)
