3D fileSpace overview

3D fileSpace can give you a bird's eye view of all your files and folders, so you get quick and direct point-and-click access to each of hundreds of items, far more than a regular 2D view can show.

And you can quickly see what is inside multiple nested folders, without having to painstakingly navigate to each one. You can drag and drop and perform Finder-like tasks. You can pan, zoom and tilt the view so it shows its contents as you prefer.

  • Get direct point-and-click access to each of hundreds of items.
  • Drag and drop and perform Finder-like tasks without switching windows.
  • Spend less time navigating folders.

You can have a single window composed of multiple panes each showing a Finder folder and the contents of folders inside, so you can keep on hand in a single window all the files and folders you use day to day. And each pane can be quickly expanded into a new full-size window, any time you wish to see the full details. And any 3D window can be turned into a drawer that sits along the edge of the screen taking almost no space yet immediately accessible.

This current Leopard release shows that the product is being tended to. Remember, the developer is also busy with Smart Scroll, which a lot of people enjoy using. Given that this is probably the developer's primary product, I'm sure a lot of time and resources have to go into maintaining that. I know from conversations with the developer that some significant changes are being worked on for future versions of 3D-Space. The current version was sufficient for me to become interested. I've seen some reviews at other sites that tend to dismiss 3D-Space without genuine consideration. My two cents is that people have preferred styles of managing information. Some like Apple's Finder. Some like the terminal. Some prefer split-panes, such as ForkLift. Others like the customization of PathFinder. To say that any one product is bad or mere "eye candy" misses the mark. I prefer a visual representation of information, and 3D-Space provides a very useful way for me to process my data and information. Just because the approach does not work for some does not mean it does not work for others.

I like to evaluate every release of this to see what is new. This version seems to have brought some nice speed improvements in the rendering of folders / icons with MANY images. I'd also like to thank the author for not limiting the evaluation time like others do...one request though? During the evaluation it is not possible to (or didn't seem to be immediately) to do any file / folder manipulation. Could this be enabled for say files of 10k or less and a limit to be able to move / copy / delete 10 folders per evaluation? How else could I decide if using 3D-Space VFS will be right for me or not? Some other visualizations would be nice too. The flat plane is okay, though to me nothing more than an extention of the same 2D space we work in everyday...just tilted. (Although silky smooth in movement now on my MacBook.) Could the individual folders be mapped to spheres, cubes, etc... that could be fully rotated around rather than just "flown over"? Thanks for the hard work on this and I look foward to playing with future releases.

I had to completely reinstall 10.4.3 and had a few problems getting 3D Space to work. The developer was very responsive in helping me to get it to work again. When the progam was not there for a few days, I relized how I have come to depend on it. It is a great application. You can put things in there that you do not access often and keep your regular dock tidy. This software has many features and I look forward to future incarnations.
