I used a registered copy of this program for a number of years and had it customized to do a specific job. When I migrated to a new Mac, the totally obnoxious registration procedure which checks an online database every time you install on a new computer gave me a string of messages that it couldn't find its server and wouldn't register my copy. The nicest thing I can say about this is, "blah." I have moved to Opal which is simpler, but faster and more reliable. It has a conventional registration procedure which won't lock you out of software you have paid for. I, personally, will have nothing more to do with this program or developer.

Why isn't Tao's successor, Neo, mentioned here?

After 5 years of productive use on several computers, I am suddenly unable to register this program on my new iMac 27. I just get an error message. Mind you, I have used these registration numbers on previous computers. Of course, the registration uses a "call home" system so registration depends on the developer staying in business and keeping that gimmick active. I have really a lot of stuff in this format and would, I guess, pay another ten bucks for a new license (not without a lot of complaining) if I had any confidence that buying a new license would solve my problem. The developer has been helpful before, but now is silent. I am very concerned that TAO has been sold to some kind of reseller who is just trying to nab another $10 from registered users.

Great, great outliner, complexity aside. But development seems to have been stopped, perhaps even abandoned. This is a shame. The latest version seems to have severe speed issues, taking several minutes or longer to open or to clip to. This had been one of the most promising and active applications up to 2007, the last time an version was released and their website was updated.
