XDrawChem overview

XDrawChem is a 2-dimensional molecule drawing program for Unix operating systems. It is similar in functionality to other molecule drawing programs such as ChemDraw (TM, CambridgeSoft). It can read and write MDL Molfiles, and read ChemDraw text and binary files, to allow sharing between XDrawChem and other chemistry applications, and it can create images in popular formats like PNG, EPS and SVG.

Great app! It was exactly what I was looking for: simple, powerfull. The most surprising thing is taht you can create 3d molecule by drawing 2d lewis representation! Really great!

While I appreciate it very very much that this program exists, I must say that it is (still) quite rudimentary. I've you've used a professional tool like ChemDraw before, don't expect XDrawChem to be anywhere like it (while keeping in mind that ChemDraw is anything *but* free). Molecule drawing is quite awkward... I didn't succeed in trying to create a napthalene system by hand because the app would not create the bond between the two shared carbon atoms of the two benzene systems and instead sort of invisibly turn it into a spiro structure which only became apparent when you used the clean-up function. Well, after about 3 to 4 hours of compiling the app itself and the countless libraries it depends on (using Fink), I'm a little disappointed but that's probably quite unfair since this seems to be a one-man project -- thus: kudos to the developer! -- nonetheless, a rudimentary app but still highly respected.

This program needs a installation of Trolltech's Qt/Mac C++ framework. Refer to "more information" or the included Readme for how to obtain and install this framework.
