GeekTool overview
GeekTool lets you display various kinds of information on your desktop via 3 default plug-ins.
Plug-Ins:
- File plugin to monitor OS X activity with /var/log/system.log, or any file that you want to follow.
- Shell mode to launch custom scripts or commands like "df" to check space left on filesystems or "uptime" to monitor load on your machine.
- Image mode helps you monitor bandwith usage, CPU load, memory availability on your server with tools like MRTG or RRD.

Alas, no longer maintained & Intel only; but it runs fine on ARM macs under Rosetta 2, a testament to the author's foresight. If you're running under Rosetta it would be well to check your existing scripts' refresh rates and resulting compute load; it will be heavier in emulation. My geeklet runs a batch script that pushes a text file (1-2 dz lines) through an awk script and outputs the result onto my screen. It refreshes every 10sec, and I can't tell anything is happening (except for the updated results of course).
