MidiKeys overview

MidiKeys shows a little keyboard on screen, and you can use the computer keyboard to play MIDI notes. 'z' through ',' is the octave starting a middle C (note 60). The keys on the row above are flats (black keys), and the octave below is on the row starting with 'q' (and the digit row is that octave's flats).

In addition, you can select a MIDI source and see incoming notes played on the keyboard.

What’s new in version 1.9.1

  • MidiKeys is now 64-bit compliant. (And no longer a universal binary.)
  • Minimum system version is 10.11.
  • Keys window is resizable (probably the most asked-for feature request).
  • Support for system dark mode, including a dark mode keyboard. A "force light keyboard" preference is visible to allow you to revert the keyboard to a traditional appearance.
  • Added Clear Stuck Keys command.
  • On systems with a trackpad or mouse that reports pressure, MidiKeys will send channel aftertouch when keys are clicked and held.
  • New "show C notes" feature that draws "Cn" where "n" is the octave (i.e., C3, C4, etc) on the keyboard.
  • Fixed an issue with key caps where certain keys like tab and delete were not shown; they will now appear as the standard key icons.
  • Changed version update feed URL to https.
  • Updated Sparkle and ShortcutRecorder frameworks to modern versions.

Pretty cool app. I would, however like to see some additional key layouts added, e.g. Wicki/Hayden (or 'jammer' as some people call it), Jankó (chromatic piano layout), Russian bayan accordion, etc. If not that, at least an option to make them yourself.

Requirements • Mac OS X 10.5 or greater • PowerPC or Intel • Software synthesizer, MIDI sequencer application, or external MIDI device with MIDI interface. Apple's AU Lab is excellent.

Hi, nice to see its working in Tiger. Only thing left now is to get the keyboard scale drawn correctly also. And yes a sustain feature would be nice - spacebutton would be good for this..
