PDP-8-E Simulator overview

PDP-8/E Simulator is an emulator for the DEC PDP-8/E minicomputer running on the Apple Mac. The simulated machine is a PDP-8/E with 4K words of memory and optionally a KM8-E Memory Extension (with up to 32K words of memory) and a KE8-E Extended Arithmetic Element. I/O devices are implemented as plugin modules, and plugins for an ASR 33 Console Teletype, an ASR 33 Auxiliary Teletype, a PC8-E High Speed Paper Tape Reader and Punch, a RK8-E Disk Cartridge System, a LP8-E Line Printer and various types of Real Time Clocks are included in the distribution of the simulator. There is also a KC8-EA Programmer´s Console plugin enabling the user to operate the simulator (nearly) like a hardware PDP-8/E, including single step execution on memory cycle level.

What’s new in version 2.5.2

  • At the end of the old year there is another fine-tuning update for the PDP-8/E Simulator:
  • Now you can option-click the Unmount button of the TU55 and RK05 drives to save a copy of the mounted DECtape or DECpack with an other file format, so the simulator now has a built-in format converter for DECtape and RK05 disk images.
  • The graphics in the Help items of the simulator are now resolution independent and dark mode compatible; until now that have been the low-res JPEGs from the 1.x version.
  • Some code cleanup and replacement of deprecated APIs. The simulator is now compiled with Xcode 15.1 and the macOS 14.2 SDK. Additionally the usual removal of typos and other little bugs.

Great memories. I am an alumnus of MIT and was one of the "8E" electronic designers working out of the "mill" in Maynard MA in the "60's". All us engineers and DEC President Ken Olsen were ahead "of the curve" back then.

This is an amazing resource - the PDP-8 was a real computer, but simple enough to comprehend. It was commonly used in "machine structures" curricula while those machines survived. Now they're really hard to find (I see one exactly like pictured here, in very poor condition, on eBay for $5,000), so it's great to have this simulator available. I think I'll work on a lesson plan or two based on this amazing tool. If you're curious about learning more - this hilarious video is a good place to start: http://acad.depauw.edu/dharms_web/pdp11/
